    It's Hämsterviel! Hämsterviel!!!

Or, in the case of 4 to 5... the Realms Shaking Retcon & Apology for Moving Away From 3e FRCS. ;) (He said teasingly to the Realms.)

    D&D 5E No Magic Shops!

The last time I had magic shops in a campaign (as opposed to people who you could omission for magic items - system was 3.5 for context)... the whole campaign actually revolved around currency manipulation using the magic item market (similar to Spice & Wolf, in terms of it being a fantasy...

Composition of RPG Groups (In person)

I completely understand and respect that point. Thank you. :) And thanks to everyone else who has listed their group composition so far.

Then perhaps the only thing we'll reach, this time around, is polite disagreement. But I hope that won't stop either of us from trying to reach understanding again next time? :)

It's OK. I won't be insulted. :) Or, if I am, I'll acknowledge that emotion is on me and work to be mature about my reaction. But as to the idea that it's false equivalency, I disagree. I can't count the number or times I've met people who have done horrible things because their identity and...

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

I know. I'm saying that they're the same definition, but the second one is when the first is taken way too far... and that some in this thread seem to be so zealous in throwing out the bathwater that they'd happily toss the baby too. Put another way, what I'm saying is I think it's better to...

Got me a beautiful wife! ...then I started liking DND!

Composition of RPG Groups (In person)

So other threads have got my curious if I'm a statistical anomaly, or if I'm closer to the average gaming experience... so I thought I'd ask and see what emerges: what are you groups like in traditional diversity terms (Gender, Race, Orientation)? Some quick "ground rules:" 1. I'm looking for...

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

Humans do seem to have a wonderful ability to tribalize everything and lump every behavior we don't like as being one big, correlated, "the enemy." (Off topic: ...this is totally not meant as the negative term of "gatekeeping" that seems to be thrown around, but check out a book called EDIT...

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

My experience with good gaming stores though is that the gatekeeper both keeps the riff-raff (people who are just there to cause trouble) out and is helpful and welcoming to new customers. The ones who just function as a bouncer are the negative gatekeepers, in my experience. My current local...

But... this is the harsh judgment of the Internet! What higher peer-review can there possibly BE?!

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

I completely agree! But I have never seen anyone gatekeeping the rules or the game (except for things like Paranoia, where it's part of the joke). I have seen people gatekeeping (negatively) their community. Maybe I'm approaching this from too much of an, "all politics is local," mindset.

    D&D 5E Luring new people into D&D

My best advice would probably be summed up as, "Get something started!" Even if you have go with only have 2 or 3 players and a DM. It's been my experience that once you get something regular and fun going, finding players gets easier. I'm not really sure why.

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

Is there no happy middle ground between reading too much into words and not reading enough into them? :) (I say that with no context or knowledge of who any of these 'people who have been hounding...' are or anything about that.)

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

Every store owner is one for his or her own community. Ever person organizing a gaming group is one for his or her own community. (EDIT: Heck, what you're doing right now is gatekeeping me, the new person on the scene in this sense.) If you're talking the broad, universal community of High Holy...

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

Yes, it was (a social group issue, not a D&D issue)... but in any social group, THAT is ONE (and only a MINOR one at that) function of what any gatekeeper/vetting person should be doing. Well, experience often drives policy. If we're talking built into the game, then I'm wholeheartedly in...

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

I lurk. A lot. I've been around since 200...2? 3? But never registered until 3 years ago when I was hunting for gamers in a new location. I recall having to re-register this last summer when I moved back to Indiana? (I probably had less than 5 posts.) I can see the reason behind doing this...

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

I did not advocate a cynical mindset. Just because something is an inherent part of a job that happens to be able to BE cynical, does that mean it MUST be done cynically or even done all the time?

    D&D 5E Mearls' "Firing" tweet

That whole incident was a massive learning experience for me. I don't think there was ever going to be a good resolution to it, in hindsight, but there were certainly better ways to handle it.
