    How useful is DMG2?

I've been DMing for over a decade. I was still impressed by some of the advice sections. And I threw out my homebrew low-magic reward rules and used the one presented within. The skill check section is another eye-opener that shows you just how many possibilities the mechanic presents. Buy...

What do you like about 4E? (not a battle in the Edition Wars :^) )

    1. Between the martial classes (including splatbooks) and the DMGII alternate rewards section, I can finally run that low-magic campaign without a single homebrew. 2. Monsters don't require extensive study to run. 3. Ten minutes' work I have a chart of monster encounters from level-1 to...

    Reflavoring Races

What to do when you want to offer your characters meaningful choices but want a human-centric campaign? Easy- Dwarf, Goliath = Peasant hero. The serfs, farmers and former(?) slaves. Tiefling, Half-Elf = Golden Blooded. The nobility and favoured ones, comfortable in dealing with power and...

    DMG2 Monster Theme

Existing monsters aside, they are extremely useful when creating new monster "lists" for your campaign.

    Question on fantasy races

Pretty much the most important point in the entire debate. A DM's purpose, method and above all reward comes from bringing these things out of their mind and on to the table.

    Question on fantasy races

There are a several excellent examples of this underused, in my opinion, trope: - The best example would be 'goblinization' in Shadowrun. An upsurge in magic levels triggers genetic switches that mutates a portion of humanity into various fantasy races. Since the change is only a generation...

    Question on fantasy races

The important thing about fantasy races is really the only (and even this is debatable) thing you need to do is present some interesting build options for your characters- although human does a good job of presenting plenty on it's own. Other than that you can refluff to your heart's delight. My...

    New Class and Race?

I think I can hear the fighter throwing down his baseball glove and screaming 'Good Grief!' I mean, as Destil pointed out there are limitations, but still...compared to the combat challenge ability...

    New Class and Race?

Hang on...do you mean that the battlemind gets to roll an attack that does equal damage, or that the battlemind automatically does damage? Because if it's the second, I'm calling broken right here and now.

    Low wealth and mysterious magic

Debatable. Players not being able to use magic as a tool will lessen its homeliness. Likewise if only non-PCs are casters then the players will never be sure of what to expect. Both would help to add to the mystery- Think of A Song of Ice and Fire for an example. As for the rewards system...

    Low wealth and mysterious magic

4th edition- use the DMG2 rules for an alternate reward. The only magic items in existance are artifacts. Only allow martial classes, and possibly one or two refluffed other classes (the bard and barbarian are salvagable). If you wish to include magic classes, limit them to one per group and...

    D&D 4E What Doesn't 4E Do Well?

I have to strongly disagree with 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 (especially), 7, 8 and 9. 1) 1st level characters may be distinct from the town guard (although a fighter more or less fulfills the same job) but as you mentioned they are not overwhelmingly more powerful- and we haven't even discussed orcs, who...

Minions are immune to non-targeted effect damage? Is this right???

Yes, but minions are generally far more likeable. I once threw 80 2nd level minions against my 4th level party. They (the party) had a wonderful time, especially the wizard and his onoging aoe spells.

    D&D 4E What Doesn't 4E Do Well?

In regards to controllers, one of the players in the group I DM plays a wizard straight from the PHB. Since he's started to really get into his character talents I have learned- painfully- never to group too many monsters together and never ever to let them dig in and hold their ground. One...

    Are you a refluffer?

Oh yes. Since my campaign is very low magic, the party wizard and avenger are enjoying their new lives as an alchemist-gunner and kung-fu monk who's belief is enough to drive away demons. All of the player races have been re-fluffed to become backgrounds...so the Tiefling is a nobleman, the...

    Setting-fluff terminology? Simple or Unique?

I'm a big believer in names, but I am also a big believer in making things easy on the party; using names similar in sound to how a group functions or appears, using a key handful of names for things the players are likely to focus on and using a small appendix so that at least some of the party...

    D&D 4E 4E sword and sorcery..

Rest assured you are speaking to a man who despises the Mos Eisley Cantina effect...good luck with your campaign flavours.

    D&D 4E 4E sword and sorcery..

Well anyway that's one way you could work it- it's easily adaptable to suit the campaign. I had another idea of people 'chosen' or 'touched' by gods- they would be more or less like normal people with a few 'extras'- for example, there was going to be a Kali-like dety who bore demonic beasts...

    D&D 4E 4E sword and sorcery..

I am currently running a campaign based on low-magic principles. I ran it as follows- - Ban all classes except for martial classes and the wizard, which has been re-fluffed to be mostly a alchemist with a few supernatural tricks that even they don't understand. I took the view that especially...

PRPG Advanced Player's Guide Playtest: Alchemist, Inquisitor, and Tactical Feats

Can't download it now but am very interested in the alchemist as I do so love a good low-magic setting.
