Shameless Movie Scene Rip-Offs You Got Away With

I have used Ambrose Bierce's "Haita The Shepherd" and "The Secret of Macarger's Gulch" as the main storylines in two adventures. Probably some of the most rewarding and scariest stuff I have ever run. Sorry I know these aren't movies, but too good to pass up on. In case any of you have never...

    Pre-published or self-written modules?

I would vote for, re-write/tweak and add my own content to published adventures if that was an option. Otherwise, run stuff I write is what I have to vote.

    Good players, bad schedules

My main group of six total people usually finds itself down one player every time we play, only had to cancel one session completely because two people couldn't make it. My Battlejack playtest group constantly struggles to find enough people from my pool of people to play. Definitely frustrating.

Help me design a religion for space pirates

You could also introduce some sort of creed to live by. Here is the one I use in a basically Lawful Evil nation. If you get caught stealing an item you are guilty. If you can steal an item without getting caught, you are not guilty. You may openly use the stolen item without repercussion. The...

    RPG Games

BG - Board Game In case you want more of an explanation. BG - Usually player versus player, you move your token around the board in an attempt to win a certain objective. TTRPG - Typically a player versus player combat game using miniature figures that have defined stats. RPG - Usually...

If you made your own RPG company

For my part, I think the "Dragon Hunters" animated movie (with Forest Whitaker) would make a great fantasy RPG setting. The Anime series "Claymore" could make an interesting RPG setting. Sort of like Fantasy Supers meets point of light in the darkness. If I could figure out how to make a "Top...

Whip and Gauntlet might warrant places on the list.

    New system, Battlejack, development updates.

Finished the Battlejack Tier 1, 2, and 3 master rule set today, it weighs in at a respectable 72 pages. Along with the ruleset there are 376 handout cards for quick reference (a Tier 1 character usually has about a dozen of them specific to their Player and Soldier). Also including a 7 page stat...

    I swing my sword

I think Iron Heroes had a pretty good stunt system. I liked that as a DM I could put in things that the players could interact with in various ways. I think the whole I swing my sword concept is kind of weird. How many action movies have I watched where the hero and villain swung their swords...

D&D Combat Time - Edition comparisons

My current gaming group is playing a pathfinder/4e hybrid, we see about 4-5 combats each session and we play for about 6 hours at a time. To me, the interesting part of this is that, in previous editions I have played 2e, 3x, after about 3 hours my attention span was waning to the point where I...

    Over-the-top fight sequences

Sometimes the players want to rip off a scene from a movie, meaning they think something they have seen in a movie would perfectly fit the situation they are in with some minor imaginative tinkering. In that case, I say encourage it. Referring to movies, books, tv shows, etc can be a great...

What I'd like to see in an RPG - Scalability in combat

Is part of the problem that the players take to long to decide what to do on their turn? Get a little 10 or 15 second timer, if they haven't started describing their action, they delay to the end of the round, if at the end of the round they still can't come up with an action in 10 or 15...

    Need Help With a Scenario

This!!! We used to play defend the castle missions when we were kids. We would have an hour of real time to come up with all of the defenses we could think of, some the DM said we could do, some we couldn't, then we had a Grand Melee afterwards. Ahhh those were the days. Have fun storming the...

Curious about options from other games

I like the reserve point concept from Iron Heroes when I played Iron Heroes. It is simple and I think melds well with the Castle and Crusades feel. I think it would work well. I agree 4e healing surges don't seem to have as natural a feel when applied to Castles and Crusades. Let us know how...

Why I don't like Wealth by Level guidelines

So are you using Wealth by Level or not in your games. If not, how is it going?

    Need feedback on this

So let's see if I understand correctly, you take an appropriate level adjustment to be able to later buy equipment outside of the normal range of what you could purchase? It seems like a penalty at early levels because you won't be able to afford anything the level adjustment grants you. At...

    Table?

I am going to be building a gaming table for my group here shortly. It is 5' wide by 9' long. it has a 12" raised border on 3 sides where the players sit (8 players total) and a 24" deep border on the side where the DM sits. in the center is a 3' x 6' area that drops down 3" in that space is a...

    Negative Player

Make sure to remind him that it is a game and that part of the thrill of victory is overcoming obstacles created by the DM, the dice and the choices of the player. If you never know failure, success feels less real and more hollow.

    What Are Your Favorite Characters?

My favorite characters are the ones that are the most fun to play. Something about them sets them apart in my memory because of their adventures, however long or short they lasted. If you can smile after a session of good role-playing, or get your friends to refer back to a character you had...

    Leveling Likes

Just a quick thought, I actually like games where you have levels but where your profession is not inside the skill system. That way you can have a Supreme Court Judge who is simply a man or woman with an incredible understanding of the law. If the players should decide to engage a Supreme...
