    D&D (2024) Bard Playtest discussion

Just popping in here to bitterly observe that with Bardic Inspiration, a bard can shout/sing/declaim/harp/dance a wound closed, but it's okay because Magic! That is all.

    D&D (2024) Ranger playtest discussion

In my somewhat jaded, looking back at 4E perspective, rangers need to have spells because there's a vocal contingent who is going to be upset at any powerful ability from any class that's explicitly called out as non-magical. I recall the most common answer to the question, at what level should...

D&D 5E The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

How I would prevent spamming now is to give characters access to only a fraction of their daily resources at any one time, then allow the character to access more of their daily resources after taking a short rest. For example, daily spellcasters only get one spell slot per spell level. When...

D&D 5E The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

Speaking as a rather vocal 4E fan, I do see the difference between the two arguments. My follow up question is whether you would accept a similar framework for martial dailies, i.e. up to (say) four units of a resource which allow a fighter to pull off a variety of spectacular effects (stun...

D&D 5E The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

Not to resurrect the whole martial vs. magical argument, but: At what level should a ranger be able (or alternatively, what skill checks does a PC of any class need to make) to create a 10-foot radius safe shelter in the wilderness that: (a) cannot be entered (or visually detected, if that is...

D&D 5E The Decrease in Desire for Magic in D&D

I think my main issues with 5E magic arise from a number of spells that I find problematic, either because they seem overpowered, even if it is under specific circumstances or against specific targets, such as heat metal, because their effectiveness varies too much based on what individual DMs...

    D&D (2024) 5e spell saves versus 4e spell attacks

This is less of an issue if the players make attack rolls when their characters cast spells and saving throws when their characters are targeted by spells. It just becomes a spell-specific application of "the players roll all the dice".

    D&D (2024) 5e spell saves versus 4e spell attacks

Mathematically, as well as from the gamist perspective, it makes no difference whether the spellcaster makes a spell attack roll or the target(s) make a saving throw. Hence, I think that the main issue is whether narratively, you favor describing how the spellcaster attacks the targets of the...

D&D (2024) Inspiration on a 20 Test: Still the forgotten mechanic

Honestly, I think that if WotC really wants players to use and appreciate Inspiration, they should just allow it to provide a re-roll instead of requiring players to declare before they use it. Humans can then add +1d6 to the higher roll whenever they use Inspiration (this is a nod to 4E, if it...

    D&D (2024) 5e spell saves versus 4e spell attacks

The proposal is: PCs make attack rolls when they cast their spells. PCs make saving throws when spells are cast against them. The Jester got the right idea. Players get to feel that the success or failure of the spells they cast are in their hands. Area spells can still do damage on a "miss"...

D&D General The Case for Evil Orcs (Minor Rings of Power Spoilers)

I think that a lot of people are Bothered About Biological Essentialism (B.A.B.E.) and I'm surprised that there isn't already a comic entitled "Rongful Races".

D&D 5E When making decisions for your character in 5E, which is your top priority? RP or G?

Of course RP and G will usually work in tandem, so think about the question in this way: when creating a PC or otherwise playing, do you: 1. Consider the mechanics first, then come up with the RP concept; or 2. Come up with the RP concept first, then think about how the mechanics can support...

D&D 5E Context Switching Paralysis, or Why we Will Always Have the Thief Debate

Well, the implication is that a 14th-level thief can't perform as well as 1st-level magic user with a (then) 1st-level spell. Even playing by the rules, thieves suck. Unless they have slippers of spider climbing, of course.

D&D 5E Context Switching Paralysis, or Why we Will Always Have the Thief Debate

May be tangential to the thread, but I suspect the reason why the bolded portion happened was that many DMs made a ruling that an "ordinary" 1st-level thief could not have an 87% chance to climb a sheer surface because they did not think it was possible for "guy at the gym" to do it. I mean...

D&D General What's the DC for a fighter to heal their ally with a prayer?

On a successful DC 15 Intelligence (Religion) check, the fighter realizes that they need to succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom (Medicine) check. A wonderful thing, divine inspiration.

D&D 5E Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

Or allow spell slots to add bonus damage to a cantrip - maybe 1d8 + 1d8 per spell level in line with paladin smites.

D&D 5E How do you define “mother may I” in relation to D&D 5E?

To this list I would add: Favored enemy and favored terrain for the ranger. Magic items for the fighter.

D&D 5E Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

In my last campaign, the paladin took Shield Master so that he could shove opponents prone as a bonus action to give the monk advantage on his multiple attacks. If I had implemented this system, I'm pretty sure he would also activate Trip Attack with every third successful attack.
