So I've been thinking a lot about this thread which petered out but was a lot of fun while it lasted. I decided to copy the rules, with a few adjustments: Loosely inspired by the game Microscope, let's build a setting together. One post at a time. These are the rules: 1) One post, one idea...

Some of the islands are bits of the sunken continent that stayed above water, leading to huge underwater mesas with corals and kelp forest closer to the upper shelves of these mesas. ;) (This should help with the room.)

Thanks! I figured there ought to be a lot of coral reefs given how shallow the equatorial waters are, and sunken continents can have a lot of "lost civilization" stuff on them. Plus I was a fan of the "Pirates of Darkwater" and there was this one area of sea mountains I really loved and wanted...

Have I thrown a wrench in the works?

Around these islands and, indeed, most places in tropical and subtropical regions there are various coral reefs. The largest region of these stretches for hundreds of kilometers and is called the Rainbow Reef because of its vibrant colors. This area is also known for pearls of fantastic...

However, some cultures have adopted a 10th month that occurs every 8 years, which resets things.

The "least" of the halfling's festivals is the week-long Matron's Festival. It is sometimes called "Matron's Sun" because it occurs in the same week as the summer solstice. It is not so much that this Festival is celebrated with any less joy or eagerness than the others, but the rainbow-colored...

The third-greatest (but, arguably, most beloved) of the halfling festivals is the week-long Hagswatch which cumulates on Hagswatchnight. It is a time of exchanging gifts and gathering with friends and families. Father Winter, the servant of the Hag, is said to give gifts to those who have none...

During the time of harvest, the moon Xalaphera undergoes a change in appearance. Colorful hues outline the various features of the skull (looking like calavera make up). These never seem to be exactly the same from year to year, and some believe they foretell about the year to come. This is...

What the equatorial seas lack in depth, the polar seas more than make up for. They are covered in ice, and attempts to fully sound them have come up with a depth of (at least) 10,935 meters (35,876 feet). Many scholars theorize the northern and southern oceans may, in fact, join through the...

A summation thus far with my own addition: The setting is a planet, physically similar to Earth. (Similar mass and gravity, breathable air, water, etc.) This planet has 1 sun and 4 moons. Each moon is the domain of a powerful goddess. They are: 1) The Maiden of Primetemps. She is the goddess...

D&D General It's Magic, You Know

Let's say we could no longer use Vancian Magic (I'm sure there are homebrews like this). What sort of spell system might folks see replacing it and why? For me I tend to like spell points and something like Ars Magica where a person can combine an "act" with something to be acted on. "Create...

    D&D General Favored Foe Help

As I mentioned, none of the other categories are any less broad (a shark is not an eagle is not a wolf yet all are Beasts; Earth, Wind, and Fire are all a great band different substances but all Elementals). Yes, this is where the problem lies. The broad categories are much better options...

    D&D General Favored Foe Help

So I was developing my own Ranger class, and looking over things and for the Favored Foe Knack (an option Rangers can take starting at 3rd level) I had: I was trying to figure out why humanoids as a group can't be a Favored Foe. They, realistically, shouldn't be any different than the others...

Have done so! Been fiddling around with it thanks to all the great suggestions I've been getting here!

D&D General A Homebrewed Ranger Class

I ended up incorporating the feat into the ability as I felt it'd be silly to have one without the other. However, I could have the elements of the feat at a different level if it's too much all at once. I'm not entirely sold on feats as a separate thing, especially the way feat trees were and...

D&D General A Homebrewed Ranger Class

Okay, thanks! I can move the Knacks to 2nd level along with the Fighting Style or move Fighting Style to 3rd. I want to avoid moving too much to 3rd, though, so the Lodge feature isn't overshadowed (and the player overwhelmed with choices).
