3 book models vs. 1 book models.

I think 32 pages is a tad optimistic (and this from me, the creator of Microlite20. Ha!), as folks will expect everything that's in the PHB, as least for a number of levels. I reckon a revised Basic D&D for levels 1-3 complete with spells, DM advice, monsters, treasure and encounter tables would...

3 book models vs. 1 book models.

I'm much, MUCH rather have a one book solution like the (bestest RPG book ever) classic D&D Rules Cyclopedia. It was possible back then to put generation, combat, spells, monsters, DM guide, mass combat, dominion rules, world maps and more into just over 300 pages. How come now, with our...

    best rpg print size?

Pocketmod sized! That's what Microlite20 uses and it's perfect for backpocket gaming. Frivolity aside, I find the size of the Core books just perfect. Big enough to be impressive yes small enough to tote under one arm.

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

Thanks for the links :) I'll take a looksee and fiddle with it over the next few days.

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

Hey that looks great! Suitably old school too; hex maps always bring a fond tear to me eye. Yours is excellent. Out of interest, how did you create it? I'm looking for a good way to make hex maps. Your overview descriptions of the lands reminds me a lot of this ancient thread I'm currently...

AoO: How are they so confusing?!

 Just because it's unnecessarily complicated doesn't mean I don't understand it!

AoO: How are they so confusing?!

This annoys me no end. Here’s how most threads which get sucked into the Big AoO debate tend to develop: A: We don’t use AoO in our games. I understand them, but choose not to use them. B: Why don’t you understand AoO? They’re easy to understand and I’m clearly posting this to show how much...

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

Wow. I'd missed that, and am flattered. That's very cool :) Sorry I've been out of action - loss of connection does that to a man. Grrrr. I'm hotspotting right now. I'm still (slowly) working on Big Shiny with plans to release it as a softcover print edition when it's done. It'll contain the...

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

Depends on the situationn, really. If you're trying to push the bad dude over a cliff, snatch something from his grasp of stop him swinging a +5 Bigass Sword of Nastiness, then an opposed STR check sounds fine. However, if you're grappling to pin so he's on the floor and out of action then...

D&D and the Cthulhu mythos: Adventure ideas?

Call of Cthulhu makes for great D&D! Remember that Robert Howard, the author of Conan, was a pen-friend of Lovecraft's and you're more than halfway there. You've got snake cults, evil wizards and enough curses to make Samuel L Jackson blush. At low-level when everything taller than a goblin is...

Microlite20 : the smallest thing in gaming

Wow. It's been a while since I was here. Sorry 'bout that. Blame lack of connection and workstuff. Ouch. Hargifex, I like your ideas for magic. That's good juju. When it comes to conditions like paralysis, stunned, etc I use the DM Rule of what's Good For Plot. Unless the victim is completely...

What's the worst character type to be an assassin-type? (other than paladins)

The Assassin PrC. All they have to do is ask what his class is, or check the character sheet. It's a dead giveaway. No subtlety at all. A smart Assassin would be a Paladin who kills under a Letter of Marque from a rival nation. It's both lawful, and good, to kill your enemies, after all. Even...

    Rules Compendium!

And I still yearn for a 3.5e version of the Rules Cyclopedia. :sigh:

    Random Number Generators

Our gaming is a strict pencil, paper and dice thing, though an occassional calculator might surface for the more complex math. When away from the table though, computers are used a lot to create NPCs, characters, scenarios, etc. That's where random number generators can be useful too, for a...

    I would play a bard if. . .

It sounds to me like you need to take a look at how I made the bard cool without changing a thing: http://wiki.greywulf.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl/LupusGris/WhenIsABardNotABard Y'see. I dislike bards too, in all their doublet-and-hose pansyass frippery. So, I cool'd 'em. Seriously. Even my players...

    Streamlining 3e

I hear the next version isn't going to be called 4th Edition at all..... it's going to be "Dungeons & Dragons Vista Home Edition" and be exactly the same as 3.5e but with a much glossier cover. Combat will be a lot slower too unless you've got a really big table and huge dice. But I digress...

Necromancer Games shutting down next year.(UPDATE post 93)

"Necromancer is not dead". This has to be the BEST news the RPG industry has had since....uh..... oh, I dunno. Since then. At least. Way to go, Bill, Clark & Co! :D We'll support you, whatever. You know that, dontchya?

    Streamlining 3e

Rolling up your sleeves is good :) Welcome to the Campaign For Minimal Rules (CaFMR), Nathan. It's good to see folks wanting simplicity in their gaming. When it came to stacking, in Microlite20 I just decided to not worry about it at all, taking the most minimal of all possible solutions...

    Thieves guild

Well met, grasshopper. Welcome to the forums (fora?). I'd suggest having another guild, or even (if you're feeling hinky) have it be a legitimate group of bouny hunters who are reformed rogues working under paladin tutelage. I have a group like that in my campaign; they do the dirty jobs for...
