    the dwarf can still kick people, or use his load as an improvised weapon (if the DM allows), and because opf his encumbered speed can move without penalty.

    Anyone know of a good encounter generator?

    the sample encounter groups in the monster manual are pretty good. using just those encounter groups, I drew up a quick one shot adventure in about 2 hours (lvl 15, all with a fire theme). drawing an interesting dungeon took more time than picking the encounters.

    Do improvised weapons count as "wielding a weapon"?

    I would just assign a weapon group to improvised weapons in this case. table legs are maces, a pointy stick will probably be a spear, sock filled with a rock is a flail, etc. that way, a rogue can still be effective and a fighter can use some weapon-specific powers. improvising a heavy blade is...

    maybe a warlord is somethng.. both barbarian and ranger have decent basic attacks, so you're maximizing your strikers' damage. you can still multiclass to swordmage if you go int warlord.

    area attacks don't target creatures, they target areas. you then roll for anything that happens to be in the area, invisible, hidden or otherwise out of sight. there's no need for specific targeting.

    you can still allow the ritual caster to be fully aware during the ritual... but if the ritual is disturbed, it doesn't function and the caster will still need the extended rest (or start the ritual anew)
