How can a party of 3 PCs at 14th level defeat a CR20 dragon?

The players could run away. I don't see it as the DM's job to balance encounters so much as its the player's job to figure out when to avoid a fight.

Check it out - I made Huge/Gargantuan/Colossal bases!

    Those are pretty cool, Kunimatyu.

    High Seas Adventures!

Yeah - 50 Fathoms is fantastic. And it could be pretty easily converted to another system. Savage Worlds is both easy to convert to and from.

3 book models vs. 1 book models.

I like the Savage Worlds model that most of their products fit into. Two books: one rulebook and one setting book. The setting books usually have a player section and GM section, and they typically sell Player's Guide versions of the setting books as PDFs for cheap ($5), with a specific license...

DM of the Rings Web Comic

I love this comic. I read it start to end the first time I saw it, and immediately sent it out to our game group and to anyone else remotely geekish that I know. Not only is the back and back-and-forth between players and DM just brilliant, but also his screen captures are consistently phenomenal.

    Storing D&D Dungeon Tiles?

I'm a Container Store junkie, so I put them in freezer baggies (based on size), then put them in Container Store boxes. The Men's Shoe Box is the best size for the tiles - they hold the big tiles flat, plus all the various baggies of the smaller tiles.

DM Burnout or DM Frustration With His Players?

Before you give up totally on your journal, you might check to see if any single player wants to keep it up. I've found (both in work and in games) that if multiple people are responsible for something, then no one will be; everyone thinks someone else will do it. But when responsibility lays...

    DIY GMs?

Okay, no it is. I use a lot of stuff, but I make up a lot of stuff, too. :)

    DIY GMs?

Need a "some of both" category; I'm right smack in the middle.

Horrible games that you couldn't resist. . .

Same here. Love reading In Nomine, not sure how to run it. Over the Edge falls into the same category. Way over the top.

    Lake Geneva Gaming Convention III

I can't make it there this year (just recently bought C&C and heard about this con), but I already told my wife that its on the calendar for next year (and she might come as well). This sounds like an absolute blast.

What new Dungeon Tile sets would you like to see WotC produce?

Caves. Need caves, and all the trappings that go with caves.

New DM, Setting imput and Advice

If the intro part isn't critical, you might just handwave it. Or perhaps play out the combat part (killing people), see if they kill the captain, then narrate the crash of the boat based on whether the captain is alive or not. Not to sound preachy, but always remember as a GM the things you hate...

WotC boards down - Technical Difficulties?

Or they could simply have a slaved backup database, from which they could backup all the data, leaving the master running 24/7, and only periodically (which in my world means quarterly, not nightly) bring it down for integrity checks.

New DM, Setting imput and Advice

Think about your intro from a player's perspective. "Wait, I'm supposed to kill everyone on the ship, including the captain? How exactly am I supposed to get home after that?" If that is simply the intro to the campaign, you might consider the ole boxed text trick (although some...

New DM, Setting imput and Advice

One thing I'd ask/suggest - are if your players are on board for your campaign concept? Have you talked to them about it, and what direction you're headed? If not, you could find them taking the ship and sailing off the island to go exploring. :) Also, as a starting GM, I'd be careful about...

Classy Way to Ask For An Explanation?

You know, the more I read this board, the more it seems like a lot of people have bad blood or an adversarial attitude towards their GM, or perhaps just GMs in general. Is this a common phenomenon?

    DM Cheating

Heck, apart from rolls that need to be secret (Notice, Stealth, etc), I usually have the players do most of the rolling for opponents attacks and damage. Hard to fudge that. :) I've found that it is way more interesting - and tense - when the player himself is rolls attacks and damage against...

Pregens for an 11-year-old's Birthday party?

Dunno about the first part (more pregens) other than making them. But as for other advice, I'd keep one thing in mind considering their newness and age: find a way to say Yes more than No. Its highly unlikely that They're going to be munchkins or powergamers; they're going to want to do the...

Classy Way to Ask For An Explanation?

"Can you break that down for me" is a great way to put it, as mentioned. I've found that usually, the only people that get defensive about that request are people that are cheating. That doesn't happen in our group (heck, they usually forget all of their bonuses, not add new ones) but I recall...
