    Steampunk Inspiration Sources

Not sure you can go wrong, my first one was Aether Shanties and it blossomed into 4 more. I like their latest "Ancient World" but would not recommend it as a starter. RK

    Steampunk Inspiration Sources

music Hello, If you are inspired by music pull up Abney Park. While London and the Old West seem to get a lot of play in terms of Steampunk settings, I would advise reading up on the history of Mexico and Cuba Those places circa 1850-1900 just drip inspiration for me. RK

Warlord is a stupid name. Call them Captains.

Roman ? The problem is that the title is either too tied to well known rank or is not evocative. Maybe we look at Roman titles ? Centurion? They did lead usually 60-80 men (sometimes more) but at least it sounds cooler. Tribune? Legate? Ok, Maybe Warlord is the best compromise. RK

My group and I don't want a "Sub-System" for dealing with out of combat scenarios.

This is an honest question, are you not the person that also lamented about not having enough Out of Combat stuff in the rules? If the core is a fairly simple engine (D20+ability mod +skill vs TN), and there are no sub-systems, what will they put in for non-combat ? Is there not a fine line...

My group and I don't want a "Sub-System" for dealing with out of combat scenarios.

skill challenges Hello, Weren't Skill Challenges just using skill checks with a X number of successes needed by X attempts? That does not strike me as a real sub-system. Turning Undead in 1/2 edition....that was a sub-system. RK.

    Why I really like D&D.

Yep This. It was not 4th edition fans that coined the terms: 3tards and TETSNBN (The Edition That Shall Not Be Named). 4th may have split the Player Base more, by not being Open, but as far as causing hardcore edition wars, it is a late comer. RK

So it's the old "Edition War" excuse to dismiss people?

too much on character sheet Maybe we view what role-playing is differently. Having to look at my character sheet for skills/feats/powers kills RPing for me. When the RPing starts, the character sheet (outside of Attributes) is very secondary. RK

A plea to stop over-complicating the base system.

+1 I could not agree more. I want as few rolls (and calculations) per attack as possible. Change the +s if you need to, don't add extra on top. As a side note, I just copy a copy of Tunnels and Trolls 7.5. I thought they had one thing to fix both armor and the fighter. Fighters get double...

Still one make-or-break issue for me...

Yeah, their "we have it, its close, its coming, we are redoing it", that was a bit of a misstep. No argument there. RK

Still one make-or-break issue for me...

You are surely not referring to WOTC decision not to renew the magazine licenses are you? If I recall correctly they gave them plenty of notice, and let them publish beyond the contract date so they could finish up the Adventure Path that was running at the time. RK.

Still one make-or-break issue for me...

already open Hello, With or without a license to use D&D on the product, 90% what we have seen so far can be redone with the SRD anyway, right? Standard Races, Classes, Feats, Skills, Spells. Even if the suits don't allow any type of Game license, the development team seems to be making a...

My Rant Apology & Sell Me Flat Math

Abstract Hit Points You know, I was feeling the same as the OP, until I realized (from my perspective) how much of this makes sense in the Hit Points are Abstract philosophy. And how much the Development Team seems to have embraced that. I have read somewhere that the overnight healing is...

    First Impressions?

But not out of pocket. The Herbalism feature gives one free anti-toxin, healing potion and healer's kit, and it only cost 25 gold for them afterwards (if I am reading that part right). RK

    First Impressions?

10th time This is about the 10th post I have seen across the threads where I agree with the analysis but disagree with the opinion. Shows the the WOTC team has their work cut out for them. My first impression was that they went back to 2nd, updated it to 3rd edition mindset and added some...

    First Impressions?

I love it. This give me a way to really play a Templar style cleric without being a full fledged Paladin. I bet you will have your distinct LG Paladin as a Class in the final run. RK

    My new game is announced!

awesome Hello, The RPG sounds great. I have wanted to redo the Battle of the OK Corral with a touch (not a lot) of Magic/Fantasy ever since I saw Tombstone. I will certainly check it out. RK

GenCon - WotC's "secret seminar" - What is the Sundering?

Forgotten Realms? My Guess: They are Sundering the Realms back apart (undoing the 4th edition thingy that they did). RK

Can we stop the Angel Summoner BMX Bandit comparisons

No, my bad was that I did not see all of the episodes, now that a couple have been pointed out, I will step back. I still hate the hyperbole as I see this as another dead end "Too Video Gamey" wall. There is certainly a gap in power. And discussing those gaps (how big, is it a big or small...

Obscure elements of D&D you would love to rescue

1/2 Elves I think I have mentioned this in other threads, but I would love a return to the mysterious, maybe dangerous, 1/2 elf. I AD&D 1st edition, 50% of all 1/2 elves were neutral and the remaining 50 was split even between good and evil. I like that. That is something I could sink my...
