    Magic items in Playtest

I really wish I had the opportunity to try the invisibility potion, but our rogue drank it the second he found it (curiosity, I suppose) and it was sort of wasted, as such.

D&D 5E D&D Next Art Column Discussion: May

I said PG-13, with moderate goriness. I figure it can't be R, because DnD should be a gateway RPG, thus be marketable to a younger audience. I don't think it should be less than PG-13, because it's still a game about killing monsters and taking their stuff. And children under 12-13-ish rarely...

    Abstract long rests

Exactly, with perhaps a set of guidelines for various playstyles/level of epicness.

    Abstract long rests

I'm not one to care much about the whole "resting for a night brings you back to full health" thing, but it seems to be at the heart of many debates on these boards. I think it's as such for simplicity's sake, myself, that being said, I can think of a very simple solution. Why not make the...

    Mana??

Well, spell point systems have always had a strong following, I wouldn't be surprised if we either saw it appear as a variant/module, or even as a mechanic for another class (perhaps sorceror, or warlock, or what have you). I can't help but think about how nice it would be to mirror the HD...

    Is this WotC's pipe dream?

I'll buy in, that's for sure. And probably change it as my main DnD edition, at least for the first year after it's release. It was my experience with 4E, I doubt it'll be different, at least at first. The real test, for me, will come about 6 to 12 months in, when I will either become bored by...

Under what conditions would you give advantage/disadvantage?

I'd give it if the character was doing something awesome, as a rule, essentially using it as a reward for creative problem solving/sweet ass moves. I'd absolutely not give advantage for flanking, for in my mind, it makes the rogue so much less interesting. I mean, he just has to stand on the...

So the playtest is out: What do you think? The EN World poll!

Although I'm the first one to admit that my mind is an easy thing to blow... My mind is blown. I absolutely love the advantage system, I find the removal of flanking to make the rogue so much more interesting, I love that most folks I've talked to see their own favored edition in it. I'm very...

    Playtest report - English edition

Kevin's Report Overall experience I've never really played a rogue before, so I tried to list all the rogue tropes and make my character the exact opposite. An honest, hard-working, loyal repairman. I think it worked well, which is a testament to how these classes can both capture the...

    Playtest report - English edition

Frank's playtest report Overall experience It felt really old school. In a good way. I was genuinly afraid my character would die, which adds to the fun of the game. In fourth ed, I never felt like the team could fail but this time. We were in deep trouble more than once. Other than that, it's...

    Playtest report - English edition

Not untrue, but it's not necessarily a habit that can't be beat. Our rogue has never played anything other than 4e, save a couple of convention games a few weeks back, and he did a great job using creativity to give himself Advantage. That being said, he did mention after the game that he found...

    Playtest report - English edition

... Because I'm running the game with my French group next week. Before I do anything, let's meet our participants! GM Nai: That would be me, I've started playing DnD about 12 years ago with a single session of Second Edition, and then moved on to third, which I played essentially every day...

    Errors

To be fair, I don't think we have enough information to claim something is or isn't an error. I just figure we're better off playing the PCs as they are, until the designers tell us otherwise.

Weapon damage dice on pregen characters / weapon chart wrong?

I've been thinking about that too. I mean, the rogue got to boost his damage dice with a few weapons in 4E, no reason something similar couldn't be happening.

    The Playtest Fighter

I'm personally expecting two things : 1- For the Weapon Master class ability to be one amongst many options one can choose. 2- For the fighter to be expected to try things like disarming and tripping his opponents, or use his environment more. We'll probably be trained back to the having...

On the philosophy of monster design in the playtest

Have you played much old-school D&D? I mean, the one thing I discovered from playing OD&D is that you really don't need complicated, deep monsters for a fight to be interesting. I mean, when your kobolds looks like (Kobold, 1/2 hd, 2 hp, Pike +1 1d6), you find other ways to make them...

    Compiled possible character sheet errors?

Because every character has an extra +2 to attack for no apparent reason. A proficiency bonus makes sense, and makes it easier when time comes to use a weapon one is not proficient with (just don't take the +2) But I might be wrong.

    Compiled possible character sheet errors?

Not necessarily. You get Advantage if you are hidden from your opponent. So if you're hidden, and then walk to your opponent and stab him in the face, in the middle of combat, while he's facing you, well, you lost advantage (because well, he saw you). Whereas with the Ambusher ability, you can...

    Compiled possible character sheet errors?

I dunno, it feels wrong. Granted, there is no basis for that assumption, but why bother showing us the +2 to damage from the Fighter ability and then just stick an invisible +2 on top. Would also explain the Greataxe damage, though.

Long Rest - Regain Full Hit Points

I don't mind it, but if you would need to houserule it, I would do as such : A long rest recovers one hit dice (which may be spent immediately). Would make healing a little faster than the old school 1-ish per day of rest, but not so fast either. Then again, being fully healed after a night of...
