Third Party: If So, Then What?

It's been said already, but it bears repeating. :) Adventures. Stand-alone, non-"WotC-feeling" adventures. To push my personal buttons, go strong Howardian sword-and-sorcery or strong Tolkienish literary fantasy ... but don't mix both into the same adventure. -The Gneech

    Is the DMG 2 recommended?

Well I certainly didn't mean to step on your toes; I was speaking of impressions. The "paragon campaign" material and Sigil all blends together in my mind because 4E has this "paragon = Planescape or you're doing it wrong" vibe which turns me off. As it is, one chapter or no, that stuff is 40+...

3rd Party Products - Do You Care?

Agreed. That's one of my big problems with Pathfinder, too ... if you're not interested in the theme of the adventure path, that's six-plus modules from them you'll never buy. I've bought some of the stand-alones, tho, because that's what I'm looking for. -The Gneech

Sword and Sorcery Saga v. 1.02 and NEW Adventure Conversion!

Well, in all honesty, it's unlikely that I'll do much more with this idea, for a reason that took me entirely by surprise: I don't really need to. The truth of the matter is that by carefully pruning available character options, 4E (at least at lower levels) will work just fine for a S&S-type...

    Level Up Two is here!

Interesting; I liked #2 better than #1, actually, but that's 'cause I'm a big ol' Lovecraft fan. -The Gneech

    Is the DMG 2 recommended?

I was underwhelmed, myself; most of the "collective storytelling" stuff was state-of-the-gaming-industry in, well, 1989, and already written by Aaron Allston for Champions. The traps chapter, which is what I bought it for, still seemed lean on hard mechanics to work with, but I'm hoping a...

3rd Party Products - Do You Care?

Yes, yes, YES to 3PP adventures, especially Goodman Games' DCC. I really dislike both the WotC fluff, and the "delve" format. But the "Punjar" setting from Goodman and the DCC modules gave me a working vision of "4E that doesn't suck," and I am grateful for that! -The Gneech

No love for DMG II !?!?

Insert "bibliophile" joke here. -The Gneech, scared of paper cuts

Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

Actually, to me that points to the brilliance of the Goodman Games DCC line -- "You can have your old D&D experience with the new shiny rules!" allows for the best of both worlds. -The Gneech

Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

That's as may be ... but this thread is the first place I've heard such. I'll certainly look into it. :) -The Gneech

    What level is your favourite?

I'll go with 6th as well. Tough enough to have some serious adventures, but without the whole "system falls apart" problem that starts around 9th - 11th. Plus still in what 4E calls the "heroic tier," which is the kind of game I love. -The Gneech

What Alignment system do you use now?

I pretty much go with RAW on alignment, but everybody ends up either "unaligned" or "good". My particular campaign setting ignores it for the most part anyway, but if I was trying for a more "traditional D&D" flavor, I'd definitely add CG and LE back in. -The Gneech

Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

Um, no, he said that "the edition war" was still going on, not that 4E was a failure. The fact that this thread is so all over the map suggests that he is probably right, whether or not he looked under the right heading for 4E games at Dragon*Con. As I mentioned earlier, I went there...

    Warlord for Dummies

Here's a resourceful warlord build that might be helpful. I play him in a friend's game: What Was I Saying...? - 4E's a Jolly Good Fellow The one thing I'd suggest (and which I did after making that LJ post) was to swap out the spear for a longspear, and only use the sword + shield combo when...

    NPC as a character

By a strange coincidence, the DMG II has a pretty helpful section on just this issue. Short answer -- pick a role and build the NPC like you would a monster, with just a few simple powers that fill the hole in the party, then hand it off to one of the players to take care of. -The Gneech

No love for DMG II !?!?

I picked it up yesterday and so far for me it's a mixed bag. I was looking forward to some comprehensive trap rules, but what was presented still leaves me a bit befuddled. I'm hoping a re-read will make the light bulb appear. The "cooperative campaign building" stuff et al. is sorta old hat...

Zendikar: The greatest D&D setting never published

It's not huge, but it's there. Mostly a matter of focus. 4E art, presumably because it's all trying to look like WAR, tends to be busy, and often has a lot of superfluous glowy bits, shiny things, or randomly floating stuff. The whole "turned up to 11" thing. I agree that it looks like...

Zendikar: The greatest D&D setting never published

Um ... no thank you. That art all looks like the 4E art ... which is one the things that's worst about 4E. -The Gneech

Dragon Con: A Sight of the Schism in action

The only gaming I did at Dragon*Con was one session of Swashbuckling Adventures d20 -- and that largely because the Call of Cthulhu session I wanted was taken. That said, I went specifically looking for some 4E to try out, but like the previous poster couldn't find any except for the Cheese...
