    familiar

Probably not unbalancing, but I think porcupines are much bigger than hedgehogs. (A little websearch told me that North American porcupines weigh 10-40 pounds; I thought hedgehogs were more in the 1-4 pound range.)

    New NPC class - Tradesman

Pretty neat, but it seems OVERLY flexible to me. :) For instance, you could end up with some odd combinations, like a Sedentary character with the better BAB. Would that make sense in some situations? Alternatively the Sedentary type could have the (1/2) BAB progression, a good Will save, and...

    Speilberg looking to do Tripods

I read a lot of John Christopher back in intermediate school (grade 7-8). Could be cool. Did you see the TV miniseries that was made back in the 80s(?)?

The Princess Bride really is very, very good!

Ok, here's a sort of literary question... WTF is the point of those "home life" bits in the book, anyhow? To show that people don't live happily ever after?

    Another mounted combat question

Is it legal to both use your mount as cover (with the Ride skill) and the Mounted Combat feat simultaneously? I see nothing to indicate otherwise, but it does seem a bit cheesy :)

    Best movie nobody's heard of...

Definitely an old movie - it's a silent as I recall - but the battles were pretty darn cool. I'm going to mention another old B&W movie from the 30s that I rather like - I wish I had a copy of it: The Saint in New York. This is thrilling if low-tech pulpy action as the absolutely fearless...

The Princess Bride really is very, very good!

Whoops! Well, one out of two (names) isn't... that... bad.... :D

    The Skirmisher Prc

I think the classes in the book (and come to think of it, the weapons) are generally overpowered. I've got a more balanced version of the Guerilla core class if anyone's interested...

    Great moments of movie magic

Raiders of the Lost Ark - when Indy confronts the swordsman in Cairo Once a Thief - the big surprise, and the final shootout Army of Darkness - when he grabs the book and what happens immediately after. Also, dealing with his twin(s). Arsenic and Old Lace - when Cary Grant's character opens...

The Princess Bride really is very, very good!

I'm pretty sure I saw the movie first, I think it is exceedingly good - but I still think the book is better in places. There's just so much more in it about Inigo and Fezzik. Maybe the film just doesn't have room/time for it, but I love those parts of the book. And the duel between Inigo and...

    Warhorses attacking

The latter makes more sense than what I wrote above... DC 10 Ride check to get the warhorse to rear and strike with its hooves makes sense, and success or failure, you'd still get your normal attacks.

What are the "Classic" Fantasy novels?

I didn't mean to doubt that they were (although I'm not sure where the line about Shadows is in the books?), but rather that I thought the dialogue in general was better than you were making it out to be. I've started reading Dunsany's The Charwoman's Shadow... man, could he ever write! :)

    Warhorses attacking

Ok, I'm convinced. :) I didn't remember there was something relevant in the MM. If you're riding the horse, the attack is automatic, and you make a DC 10 Ride check to attack as well. If you're not, you can command it to attack with a Handle Animal check.

Rangers: the use of animal companions in-game?

Yep, I know, that does make good sense. In retrospect maybe I would have been better off with a higher Wisdom than Charisma. I originally had them that way, but when I realized that Charisma was the skill involved in Handle Animal I decided to put Charisma first because I wanted that skill to...

[DHR] Sidewinder: Recoiled Chapter 6 preview...

Well, no, that's ok. I haven't looked at the most recent ones as I already consider myself interested. I've thought about running a Desperado/John Woo style western game with Feng Shui, but for a more realistic game (something like Eastwood or John Wayne's westerns) I don't have anything. So...

    Light spell

Torches burn at only one end, and the description you quote mentions a point, so I'd say it's a point. Which could be kind of handy in that you could sheathe a sword with light on it when you want to sneak in the dark.

    Warhorses attacking

I thought I had this clear in my head until I read your post. :) First, though, nowhere does it say that a warhorse will attack on its own. I suppose if your character was down on the ground being bludgeoned to death by orcs it might recognize its master was in danger and attack. I seem to...

What are the "Classic" Fantasy novels?

To each their own. I think you're exaggerating about the dialogue, and that it is truly a classic series. Personally, I feel a few of the series mentioned are those I don't like or simply don't think will be considered classics 30 years from now. Everyone has their own tastes. :) Overall the...

Too many darn previews! When will the game be released? :)

Request for Opinions re Fantasy Novels

I wonder what the priorities are of the store? Sales of course are important, but a lot of the best books written weren't published in the last year. (I'm too tired right now, but I will try to think of recent books that I really enjoyed. Tomorrow.) For perennial great books, you might try...
