Press [Chaosium] Chaosium acquires 'The Dhole's House' online resource for Call of Cthulhu

It has been super helpful! Especially for making quick pre-gens for one shots.

Worlds of Design: To Move or Not to a New Edition?

I'm deeply appreciative of Call of Cthulhu's approach - 7th edition added a load of substantial improvements which make play easier and more fun but is 100% backwards compatible to the extent that I can run even 1e adventures at the table with only very occasional need to quickly times a number...

    D&D 5E Sanitizing Curse of Strahd (+)

I just had a thought on the issue of wanting an unambiguously positive ending if the PCs can defeat Strahd: Barovia returns to it's native world on the Prime Material Plane and all the trapped souls (I'm only on session 3 in my campaign and we've already got 1 dead PC) are freed to go to the...

    D&D 5E Sanitizing Curse of Strahd (+)

How about - in the Amber Temple (somehow) the PCs discover that there is one other enclave of Dusk Elves out in the multiverse. They are not the last of their kind! But, like everyone else, the Elves are trapped here by the mists. If the PCs can find a way home for themselves (by defeating...

    D&D 5E Sanitizing Curse of Strahd (+)

One of the things that I always loved about Ravenloft (and CoS) is that it’s own mini-genre of heroic Gothic horror. There is the possibility of doing some good, defeating a Darklord and freeing its people, if one can survive the corruption of living in that world. (On which note, giving souls...

    D&D 5E Sanitizing Curse of Strahd (+)

I’m DMing it but we’re still at Death House. I’m definitely not going to cut any element outright but I agree OP that it aspects bear a bit of thinking about. I also completely agree with your point that how I handle the material as DM will make all the difference; apart from the Vistani I want...

    D&D 5E Sanitizing Curse of Strahd (+)

I haven’t played that bit of the adventure yet so I’m still weighing up how I personally feel about it, but it’s often discussed as problematic on other forums: if I’ve understood the argument correctly the element some commentators find problematic is the way that people who are physically...

    D&D 5E Sanitizing Curse of Strahd (+)

Some people also add the Mongrelfolk to the problematic list as essentialy a depiction of people with disabilities/who are disabled and have mental health issues. On the Vistani - Dragon Issue 180 reworks the Vistani as a culture not a race which works. I'm building on that so that anyone of...

Buffy: An Appreciation and a Ranking!

I rewatched for the third time this year but stalled mid-season 6. Overall my impressions are similar to yours: mostly it’s ages well and there is some amazing writing in it. I’m unlikely to get to the end of 6 this pass though because the formula starts to feel sadistic - ‘what else can we heap...

    D&D 5E Dungeon Crawl Rules

All these years and I'd never noticed the detail about secret doors in the DM's Guide - thank you all! (Face palms) Much clearer now. Ooh - that's super clear - thank you!

    D&D 5E Dungeon Crawl Rules

I guess a specific which has always tripped me up is the difference between Perception and Investigation. If feels like both should find a secret door or a trap but Perception should be quick with a high DC and investigation take time with a low DC. I guess I’m looking for things around that.

    D&D 5E Dungeon Crawl Rules

So I've been coming across a running theme recently, of how 5e lacks a clear procedure for handling a dungeon crawl. See here for example: While it should only take me 15 minutes to sit down and adapt these rules to 5e a) I'm really lazy b) I love using things other people have actually...

D&D General Masque of the Red Death/Whispers in the Dark

Interesting to think about! I suppose the thing about straight Call of Cthulhu that I would miss from d20 level-based games is I like that sense of progressing from survival at lower-levels to bad ass at higher levels. I notice that Whispers in the Dark has only 10 levels on a flatter...

D&D General Masque of the Red Death/Whispers in the Dark

Thank you, that’s really useful. I guess I’m still trying to figure out exactly what I’m looking for - I like the lore of the Red Death and the setting of a twisted version of 19th C. I’m running Curse of Strahd in 5e and Masks of Nyarlathotep in CoC 7e edition are the moment and I’m loving both...

D&D General Masque of the Red Death/Whispers in the Dark

Has anyone ever played low-magic Gothic or Lovecraftian horror using D&D variants such as Masque of the Red Death (2e or 3e) or the new Whispers in the Dark? I’m not trying to restart that the ‘can D&D do horror’ debate as I’m pretty sure it can - albeit a form of heroic horror where your heroes...

Dungeon Master's Screen Wilderness Kit: An In-Depth Review

Forgive me if this has already been covered but are there any new rules in this? Or is just collating rules from PHB and DMG and making them easier to reference? I’ve read several reviews and I can’t find a clear answer anywhere!

    D&D 5E D&D Needs New Settings

Yeah, I would be up for something with real flavor that isn’t kitchen sink fantasy. I remember the surprise of Dark Sun when it came out - it felt so different to Greyhawk and the Forgotten Realms. Would like to be surprised again!

D&D General What's your favorite starter sandbox region?

Seeing some love for Karameikos, which I’ve just found in my attic despite not remembering ever buying it - what in particular works about it? (I was about to list it on eBay but might hold off!)
