D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

I stand corrected. And very pleasantly surprised.

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

I don't ever recall really complaining about the Bard using Charisma for its casting stat. Just pointing out that the idea that the Bard uses MUSIC for his casting of spells was introduced in 3e when the class became a Charisma caster. And I feel that the implication that, "It's been this way...

Then he doesn't do it through raw force of personality, but it's very often that kind of character who knows all the legends and lore about monsters, their likes/dislikes, their languages I have to disagree here. Having a larger than life/forceful/inspiring/intimidating/charming personality...

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Bards use a musical instrument as the focus for their spells. They can't just use a component pouch unless you change the rules. I didn't mention it because Charisma as a casting stat doesn't really irk me and not one of the things I would bother tweaking. If I were pressed to change it to...

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

What flavor is that? Tacking the flavor of a musical performer onto a Captain (Skald), Noble (Minstrel), and Scholar (Bard), etc can fill the need of a Bard character in heroic fantasy. You can still have a separate Bard class- but not necessarily because the general concept is impossible...

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

The instrument is pretty much a requirement with the current design of the 5e Bard, as its the only Tool proficiency Bards get and required for their spellcasting. And Bards didn't use Charisma based spellcasting until 3e. In 1e, they cast spells as Druids and in 2e, they cast them as...

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Which is pretty much what I do in 5e until WOTC decides to do it in some more official capacity.

To be fair, refluffing the Bard isn't the ONLY option I presented. D&D can (and has) introduced class variants that swap out many class features and change the flavor. That doesn't get rid of the original class. D&D has also introduced other classes with overlapping...

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Pretty sure if the Bard were redesigned to be like the classes I mentioned- but still capable of fulfilling the wandering minstrel characer type through subclasses/feats/backgrounds/etc, people would cry foul about it deviating from D&D traditions and it's idiosyncrasies as a part of its unique...

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

I don't see how. I would prefer a class like the One Ring RPG's Scholar/Fantasycraft Sage or Keeper to the Bard and I hope D&D releases such a class. I try to homebrew such classes. But I'm not asking WOTC to get rid of the D&D Bard and saying nobody can ever play such. I know what they're...

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

I haven't called for the removal of the class. I don't think OP did either. I think the concept could be executed better by taking cues from the classes in the other games I mentioned. But I find that unlikely due to the fact that the minstrel flavored lore keeper/scholar/support class is...

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

And if THAT is the trait they decide is to define the class in D&D then some people are going to find it silly, as the term Bard and the popular perception if the wandering minstrel have changed over the centuries and D&D doesnt make them take it any more seriously when it tries to play into...

Then they should get automatic proficiency in those related skills, spells that reflect them drawing magic from those sources, and be shown engaging in those activities in equal amounts- as they do for music. Or lose the base class associations with music and be able to select it as a subclass...

They dont. But they still encounter them and find them silly.

A lot of stuff was was included. It's not really a given that every scholar, lore keeper, speaker, and/or learned person was trained in musical instruments and functioned as a charming wandering minstrel.

D&D 5E Anyone else think the Bard concept is just silly?

Didn't say they didn't. But the OP does. He asked if others do. Many do. I commented that while I don't find the idea of a lore keeper with training in music too annoying. I think the lore keeper class automatically being the music class and automatically getting proficiency in...

D&D 5E Looking For Samurai Trope Abilities

The BIGGEST samurai trope is having them charge at their opponent, make a slashing stroke then hold the pose with their back to their opponent until the opponent realizes they've just been mortally wounded and keels over. Usually followed by the samurai flicking the blood from the blade and...

    D&D 5E D&D Class Design Criticism

I also remember one of the commonly heard criticisms of 4e being that 1st level characters felt too hardy/powerful. There are some people who seem to enjoy having characters struggle a bit with more limited resources and higher levels of lethality at lower levels.
