D&D 5E The Multiverse is back....

All of this discussion about the philosophical suitability of Planescape is kinda orthogonal to the point of the thread (at least as it started out), isn't it? My problem with PS is with how it's pushed down other settings' throats as a metasetting. On its own? Cool. Not my style, but alright -...

    D&D 5E Does RAW have a place in 5e?

pming - None of those actions are dex-based skill checks, so if that were RAW instead of the mushy mess that is the existing wording, yes, more specific /would/ also be miles clearer. If the GM thought those actions should be penalized for wearing a cestus, they could make a ruling. GMs should...

    D&D 5E Does RAW have a place in 5e?

Having not played any 5e, I went for an example I was knowledgeable about - PF. But ultimately, PF was just an example. The sort of things I'm talking about are things I consider general design principles. Both RAW and RAI exist in PF and in 5e; I was illustrating a place in the former where...

D&D 5E The Multiverse is back....

I've always much preferred the material plane settings that weren't explicitly connected to the Great Wheel (Eberron) or which were intentionally made remote from it (Dark Sun). So... meh? It's not like I'll use the multiverse whichever way they publish things.

    Updates re: the Kickstarter

I had sent just such a message, and hadn't gotten a reply. That was the impetus for this thread, actually. Yes, I'm moving right away. Can I PM you the new address? EDIT: PM you the new address here, I meant, though I could on Kickstarter if you'd prefer.

    D&D 5E Does RAW have a place in 5e?

At that point, though, it's clearly a case of DM fiat instead of a game design bit. The discussion changes from "I can't tell how this is supposed to be resolved" to "I think this should be resolved differently." For example; several years ago, I joined a D&D 3.5 game. I built a duelist...

    D&D 5E Does RAW have a place in 5e?

I am very late to this thread, so apologies if I'm covering already-thoroughly-tread ground; RAW is exceptionally important. Without it, I have to resort to continuously asking my GM questions just to make a character, let alone play. I've been playing a lot of Pathfinder lately. I've...

    Updates re: the Kickstarter

RangerWickett Morrus It's been almost two months since we've heard anything from the Kickstarter, aside from getting the PDFs of the card. I think an update is long overdue. [On a personal level, I'm moving and need to change my address for the Kickstarter, and I'd like to know how you'd like...

Firearms: Reloading, Speed Loading, and ammo clips (4e)

I think it worth pointing out that the Rogue build RangerWickett suggested was the Thief, which is /also/ an essentials class. The gunslinger may still work with the rogue, though. They're generally assumed to be using Crossbows anyways if they're doing anything ranged. Now that I think about...

Volunteers to proofread the 500 page Act One hardcover (4e)?

I'm a bit disappointed in the Act I HC - several of the spelling mistakes I noted in adventure 3 are still present! I'm afraid my notes regarding sentence structure or clarity may have drowned out those I made about simple typing errors. :( All of the page references seem correct, though.

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

It's more like; Statement: "I've had no trouble playing D&D theatre of the mind for 30 years." Response: "Other people did, because the rules weren't written for it. It may be fine for you, but objectively it is less well suited for that style than games that were built for it."

    hand-spell specialist name?

Aww, man. I came into this thread just to post this. :P

On our way to GenCon - also, the 4e act one compilation is on sale

I got mine, so at least a portion of them emails were sent out.

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Look, at this point we're going around in circles. Fine, I don't have any proof. But the only internal info we do have - that, yes, does not constitute proof - is that 4e had massive, unreasonable brand expectations. If that's the only internal info we're operating under, how is saying "that's...

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Wanting 5e to unify the playerbase doesn't necessarily mean that 4e was dropped for the purpose of "recaptur[ing] their target market." The switch could have been made for any of a number of reasons, including a purely company-policy directed one, and they still could have had unification as a...

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Imaro I read it, and I read it very, very carefully. Nothing in that post has any information about why 4e was dropped. As I said, Scott Rouse would have been off the team for a long time at the point that post was made. All that post says is that there is community splintering. We've known...

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Hate to break it to you Imaro, but that doesn't really have anything to do with what Tony, Pemerton, or I have been saying throughout this thread. That was a post made the day 5e was announced about community trust issues with Wizards, not a reveal of the motives behind the choice to move to a...

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Sorry to be jumping in on just a part of this post, Mercurius, but I just wanted to tie this back to what I was saying earlier in the thread; There is no information we have than can peg the cancellation of 4e on this. The information we do have - admittedly incomplete - points more toward...

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Tony Vargas misspoke WRT clerics, but even so they were inelegantly shoehorned into Dark Sun in 2e. 4e's version of the setting is at least consistent when it comes to Divine stuff, and the Dawn War fit very well with the setting. Tieflings were an unnecessary addition, I'll agree. The...

D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

The original 2e boxed set recommended you start at level 3, because characters from Athas were more powerful and competent. 4e didn't need that because characters start out powerful and competent. Compare with the compromises DS had to make to work with its original 2e ruleset - like the weird...
