Actually, I think it is the normal scythe. The PHB scythe is not a normal farming implement. It states that the weapon has been sharpened and strengthened for use in battle. -Chris

Something I just remembered as reading this post. There is an alternate fighter class that is quite usable as a base in one of the recent issues of Dragon, issue 311 I believe. It has a few vaiant fighter classes, one of which is easily used as a basis for a swashbuckler. -ChrisC
