D&D 5E I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Very interesting thread! I can't help but think, as least as far as I'm concerned (and I'm what you would call a 'grognard' or 'OSR acolyte') -- that D&D IS BACK!! LOTS of speculation/personal opinion to follow; you have been warned. :) My grog friends (the ones I know and game with) seem to...

D&D 5E Gods of Mythology, many campaign settings, in the appendix!

I'm with the 'glad it's there' camp. Saves work for the DM and adds a Deities & Demigods feel.

    D&D 5E Player's Handbook Binding

I agree; a retailer should be responsible for ensuring that the copies that hit their shelves are free from defects. It's really not fair to expect someone to plunk down $50 (especially in this economy) for a book with a dinged, dented, or damaged cover. I hope you brought the issues to the...

D&D Fans Rejoice:! WotC Releases the 5th Edition Player’s Handbook! (Part 2: Adventuring & Magic)

+1 I agree. This edition strikes me as the ultimate house-ruled mash up of OSR/early eds, d20, and some outside influences such as Savage Worlds and Numenera.

D&D 5E grabbed the PHB at lunch - art is really great

Brilliant! My experience was similar, 'cept is was 21st Amendment IPA on draught. :)

D&D 5E grabbed the PHB at lunch - art is really great

Got my copy at lunch today, too! But I extended my lunch at the Brazen Fox and gave the book a good flip-through. :) The layout and the look of the book is fantastic. Love the intro by Mearls, too. My favorite artwork, however, are the Conditon sketches. Those are hilarious! There's also a...

D&D 5E Instant gratification versus saving money

I do not NEED the PHB with any urgency. But, I still got a copy from the Strat as soon as it opened! :) I haven't been this excited for a new rpg since Labyrinth Lord came out.

D&D 5E What are you going to keep from previous editions/other d20 games?

As others have said, gotta play it first. But the only house rule I may implement is one of omission: auto full healing w rest. That is just a bit too video-gamely for me.

D&D 5E Playing with a battlemat but without a grid

I ran my B/X campaign last year w both scaled and unscaled, grid (gaming paper) and gridless paper. Sometimes we just used a single sheet of notebook paper and jotted positions down with a pencil. Since D&D combat relies heavily on range and scale, I prefer either a grid or no map at all and...

D&D 5E [LMoP] My Players just cakewalked through Part 1 (Spoilers)

Sounds like you and your players both play smart and fair. The module is an intro and sounds like the party is already past that lol. I am expecting similar results when I run the module next month. We just finished a 6-month 1e campaign, and these guys have learned to be VERY cautious!

Where did you first buy your D&D stuff?

Was given Moldvay Basic by a friend who was moving into AD&D in '81. After that it was either Compleat Strategist in NYC, or Allied Hobbies throughout the 80s.

    D&D 5E Adv/Disadv - how often do you use?

Good points, all. I will have to see it in action, of course. I will be running 5e in September with my group. It will be very experimental; I may run a combat where the PCs all have advantage and then all have disadvantage in the next. I'm very curious to see when you explode this dynamic out...

    D&D 5E Adv/Disadv - how often do you use?

This sounds ... stingy to me. Advantage, to me, is a narrative/dramatic device with a mechanical side effect. By only allowing it for 'unimportant' rolls ... I dunno, that just doesn't sound like fun. To me, the point of [ad/disad]vantage is to pump up the drama. Like you say, it is (for now)...

    D&D 5E Adv/Disadv - how often do you use?

I think that as long as the core rules do not apply additional bonuses for high ground, I would definitely do the same and give Advantage to the player. I wouldn't give advantage if they were also getting a +2 to hit, however. I am hoping that 5th keeps alive the spirit of DM fiat and we don't...
