D&D 5E Why I love 5E - the renewal of Theater of Mind

For sure D&D in general and 5e in specific straddles the line. My argument isn't that you can't or shouldn't use TotM for 5e, but that its not 100% geared towards it nor is it very good at it.

I can't tell if you agree with me or not.

D&D 5E What are the roles of paladin spells?

If that's the case, its weird to even give them spells. Its a lot of space for something that isn't very useful.

D&D 5E Why I love 5E - the renewal of Theater of Mind

The point being that D&D is a game that worries about the difference between a speed of 25 feet and a speed of 20 feet. It is a game of exact distance, even if people choose to handwave them. As opposed to say Edge of the Empire, which is a true TotM game and uses only abstract measurements...

Anyone can easily do that with grids. That's what wet erase mats are for. No one says you even need "correct" minis. Or any minis. TotM and grid have differences, but freedom isn't one of them.

    D&D 5E Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

I think at some point many people forget that RPGs are really just a game of pretend with rules to make us feel less "immature." If I as the DM can decide that my 2nd level party have stumbled on a cave with a 24th level red dragon inside that easily wipes the party with one breath attack, I am...

    D&D 5E Dragonborn inter-species breeding?

I would recommend not giving this person your home address.

    D&D 5E Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

Yes there are very different ways to play the game, and I don't begrudge anyone's playstyle. Up until the point I get called a cheater and liar. Recently in my game one player was convinced there was a trap in the hallway of a dungeon. He came up with an idea for testing the hallway for traps...

D&D 5E What are the roles of paladin spells?

Its easy to have an extra heal prepared for emergency.

D&D 5E What are the roles of paladin spells?

Can we talk about how weird it is that smite is a super strong class feature and yet paladins also have smite named spells? That by and large aren't better than just using those spell slots to do a regular smite?

D&D 5E What are the roles of paladin spells?

Fueling smites and the occasional heal. You could make them spell less by just giving them X smites per day, more lay on hands healing, and summon mount.

    D&D 5E Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

This is still going? DMs can't cheat, because they aren't actually playing a game. Do my players know I fudge? No idea. Do they really want to know? No more than they want to know their wife thinks the ironic mustache they grew is ugly. As long as the game is fun and they don't think I'm...

D&D 5E Magic Items: DMs Thoughts.

You are correct, but I meant "shortswords are a trap for one handed weapon STR Fighters."

Yeah something along those lines is my preference.

D&D 5E Magic Items: DMs Thoughts.

I don't know how we got on short sword vs longsword or any other similar weapons. I blame myself. A Fighter wielding a club one handed and nothing in the other hand is significantly worse than one that weilds a longsword and shield. The club is a trap option for fighters. Its not some sort...

D&D 5E Magic Items: DMs Thoughts.

I'm just talking from a theoretical standpoint. The short sword is unarguably worse. It is a trap option. Choosing it is a flavor choice that is punished by the mechanics of the game. Now I agree that isn't a super big deal. In 5e, at least at low levels. And yet, there is no doubt in my mind...

D&D 5E Magic Items: DMs Thoughts.

And yet, most people have always chosen those better weapons weapons if able. Given the option between a max 6 value and a max 8 value in any given situation people are going to overwhelming go for the higher number. And if the difference is so minimal in you eyes between a d6 and a d8, why...
  18. The Human Target

D&D 5E Magic Items: DMs Thoughts.

That to me is senseless. In the end the game is providing some options that are clearly mechanically better (but of course not being 100% above board with that fact.) The game is also presented as a game, with challenges to be overcome. Effectiveness is important. As is keeping up your end of...

D&D 5E Magic Items: DMs Thoughts.

Why must flavor come at the cost of effectiveness? Why would players in a game all about overcoming challenges want their characters to have anything less than the best? How many PC Fighters have I ever seen use a quarter staff? None. Why? Cause its a terrible weapon for a Fighter in most...

D&D 5E Magic Items: DMs Thoughts.

Except for all the nerd arguments I've read over the years debating exactly what weapons and armor trump other weapons and armor.l Trying to make medieval weapon fans happy is a fools game.
