Do You Sometimes Purchase RPG Books Just To Read (Not For Play Purposes)?

I’m a huge Star Trek fan, and for the last twenty five years plus practically, all the ST:RPG stuff has been collected, read, and borrowed from rather than played. My gang always stuck with FASA (with some extrapolations). We did try LUG, but found Decipher too close to D&D 3e. I collected...

Do You Sometimes Purchase RPG Books Just To Read (Not For Play Purposes)?

My experience, too! I was quite surprised with the Avalanche Press stuff (and I agree with you about the covers). I collected the Conan stuff for the material, and was tempted to run Mongoose’s 2nd Edition.

Adventure In The Far Future With Traveller Second Edition

In all fairness - and as a general observation - if an article/review/whatever is deemed good enough or important enough to be elevated to the front page news section of Enworld, it needs to be able to withstand a bit of scrutiny. I find nitsua60 had some legitimate questions, but the...

Latest PF2 Info On Theatre Of The Mind, PDF Timing, German Translations, & More

Well, the first paragraph from Bonner is very sobering: “Theater of the Mind? Never really thought about it. You mean some of you would be interested in that?” Times have changed.

The Pathfinder 2 Barometer! Vote your initial hot take!

I gave up on PF after spending LOADS on it. I’m just not interested in character optimization any longer, and I’m not interested in having to go online and search for threads on how certain mechanics (especially with certain classes) are supposed to work. I never did understand the...

Pathfinder 2E Paizo Announces Pathfinder 2nd Edition!

Works for melee, but not ranged. ”But DM, you told me all 8 of my arrows ‘hit’ the knight during the fight this morning! He’s smoozing with the barmaid now!” ”Um...Just a flesh wound?” HP inflation is a huge problem when finite ammunition is considered.

Pathfinder 2E Paizo Announces Pathfinder 2nd Edition!

MORE!? I’m one of those crazy folks who think myriad rule-based design options are actually restrictive instead of liberating. “Oh! My character can do this for sure!” ”Do you have that feat and its prerequisites?” ”Oh... never mind...” :uhoh:

    When Fantasy Meets Africa

Cultural appropriation. Social <insert trendy noun here>. Othering (!?). Sometimes a cigar’s just a cigar, folks. Keep calm and game on.

[UPDATED] Most D&D Players Prefer Humans - Without Feats!

There is another possibility for those surprised with this information: As large as it is, the Enworld community (at least many members posting in this thread) is an aberration. The great unwashed, unenlighted riff-raff that don’t hang out online with hyper-fans must be legion, and play...

Taking A Look At The "New" POD Versions of Star Frontiers And The D&D Rules Cyclopedia

“The rise of POD and PDF publishing in gaming makes this possible, even if it makes the producers of retroclones obsolete.” Oh, really? Wishful thinking on your part? I wouldn’t worry about that too much. The genie is out of the bottle (and has been for almost a score of years). Nothing...

    Looking At Dungeon Tiles Reincarnated

I had a fortune in these at one time. For me, the theory was sound, but the utility was lacking for the reasons others have noted. Strangely enough, I prefer the old Steve Jackson’s Cardboard Heroes line to be more useful and practical.

Rules Cyclopedia Of Basic D&D Now In Print

Not likely. It’ll be a supplement to, at least. As much as I love this book, the system still uses To-Hit charts. Turns me off every time, and so go straight to all the wonderful OSRs instead.

Official Character Sheets for Captains Kirk, Picard and Other Enterprise Crew

I’ve got both sets and I must say I have really enjoyed them. The running narrative through the TOS set, especially, is really well done. At first skeptical about the 2d20system, this old FASA Star Trek fan is really beginning to see the - dare I say - beauty in it, at least from what I can...

RPG Crowdfunding News 076: SIGMATA, Tome of Horrors: Reborn, The Idol of Cthulhu, Masters and Minion

Sigmata, the Wedge Game! Yay!! Just what we need!! But, as Vexorg pointed out, this setting seems more akin to a leftist civil war more than left vs. right (socialist vs. communists), with some trigger words thrown in for good measure. Also some anarchist elements. Reminds me a lot of when...

Basic Fantasy Role-Playing: An Entertaining Game With One Of The Most Robust Communities You'll Find

I loved 5e _except_ for the cantrip system. To me, it made the casters woefully bland. It mattered little what the description of a damage-causing cantrip was, for instance: it was just another 1dX attack repeated round after round. Even the PCs tired of it eventually. Like the Coke bottle...

Basic Fantasy Role-Playing: An Entertaining Game With One Of The Most Robust Communities You'll Find

Not to sound overly dramatic, but Basic Fantasy is the game that gave me my hobby back. For someone like me who suffers from "analysis paralysis" when faced with seemingly endless rules/character/design options*, it is an incredibly liberating game creatively for me. * Yes, I'm one of those...

#Feminism Is A Collection of 34 "Nanogames" From Designers Around The World

This is offensive on so many levels. Really? Feminism has been boiled down to this generalized tripe? That won't undermine the seriousness of a cause... no way... As others have pointed out, these as RPGs is a huge stretch. They could substitute RPG with Lego, and you'd get the same...
