D&D 5E 5th ed D&D general impressions from a new player and DM.

If you are just using the PHB spells, WotC has the list you need here. Also, you can search spells on dndbeyond. If you haven't purchased the sourcebook for the spell, you won't see the full spell description, but you can at least find the class, school, level, ritual tag, save type, etc.

    D&D 5E D&D Up 35% In 2020 While Virtual Play Rises 86%

Agreed. Of my 3 games, one will go back to in person, but one now includes friends that aren't local so that one is staying on Roll20, and the third will be in-person or virtual depending on the DM. One of the silver linings of COVID-19 has been more time for D&D and connecting with...

    D&D 5E Choosing a 3rd party monster book

+1 for Tome of Horrors 5e and Fifth Edition Foes. FGG is licensed to publish monsters from the 1e Fiend Folio and Monster Manual II, so in addition to in addition to FGG content these books have a lot of 5e stat blocks for AD&D monsters that I haven't seen published anywhere by WotC - Crypt...

D&D General Advancing the Plot when the PCs don't take the bait. . .

I've used a rival adventuring party as a successful device to raise the stakes and drive the action for the party. Yes, it's a cliché but it's one that works. Sometimes it's as simple as while the PC's went on the "Recover an Item" mission instead of "Clear out the Bad Guy Camp", the NPC party...

D&D General What editions of Dungeons & Dragons do you like?

5e because it's the most accessible for people, so it's easy to find folks willing to join a one-shot or a new campaign. 1e for the nostalgia of playing through classic TSR and Judges Guild adventures, and because it was the closest match for B/X since that wasn't one of the options. In truth...

WotC Who should own Wizards of the Coast if/when it is sold?

Since this post is pure fantasy, here's my buyer: Necrotic Gnome with a massive LBO.

D&D General Whom has had a greater impact on D&D? Gygax or Greenwood?

Gygax because of his drive to write, publish, and promote the original game. Second place goes to Tom Moldvay.

What needs to be in my Amazon wishlist?

Art & Arcana Maybe some books about running the game? Return of the Lazy Dungeon Master The Monsters Know What They're Doing A paint set to get you inspired to start working through your backlog of minis?

    OD&D [BECMI/BX] Natural healing?

We play with a house rule that if you make a d20 con check (equal or below con score) you recover d6 hp instead of a d3.

D&D General How Would You Describe Your D&D Group

Group #1 (5e) 7-8 people. Started at a game cafe at the beginning of 2017 and is now on Roll20 due to COVID. The lineup has changed considerably since we started; I'm the last of the original players in the group, and most are "3rd generation." Switching from biweekly to weekly improved...

D&D 5E Sorcerer vs Warlock: Which do you suggest?

Just pick one and enjoy your first D&D game! Ask your DM if you can change your character after you start if you really aren't having fun with it. IME most DM's are flexible about that in the first few levels, especially with new players.

    D&D 5E Paladin/Hexblade+Options

It's fair and reasonable if you shared with the players ahead of time what the character creation rules were so they could decide whether to play in the campaign or not and knew what characters to bring to session zero. Nothing wrong with limiting races, class and subclass options, and toggling...

D&D 5E Sell my Party on a Cleric

One selling point for the cleric is that it is a front-loaded class. Other than the 17th level domain feature, a 10th level cleric has all of its class abilities. They have all of their bread and butter abilities like Channel Divinity, Destroy Undead, Divine Strike (or Potent Spellcasting)...

D&D General Great and not so great setting specific sourebooks/modules

I'm playing through the Odyssey of the Dragonlords campaign which is set in a land inspired by Greek mythology. There are cool races and class options and "epic paths" that give each player unique story goals. Our group is having fun with it. Judging from the rules, setting material, and artwork...

    D&D 5E Wood Elf Monk

If you start with the premise of playing a wood elf scout or skirmisher, someone who travels light and fast and strikes with spear or bow, and then melts away into hiding again, then monk is a great fit as is because it can do all those things. Ki is not very specific - on my wood elf Open Hand...

D&D 5E All four Original Adventures Reincarnated!

Thanks for the content summary. I have v.1 and a friend in our D&D group has v.2. We've been on the fence with v.4 while holding out for ToEE. Since we have B/X (OSE) and 5e games going on different nights I'm sure one of us will eventually get v.4 just to have the option to run it in either...

    OD&D Best Classic Adventures?

We recently started a game using the OSE rules and it's been a lot of fun so far. Playing through B3 Palace of the Silver Princess before heading to the Isle of Dread. I haven't seen it mentioned yet but B4: the Lost City is a good mini-campaign. The Goodman Games Original Adventures...

Unearthed Arcana Subclass features - Is "(as if concentrating on spell)" the same as concentrating on a spell?

This was helpful. I didn't see that the Trickery domain used the same verbiage. I found a Sage Advice that answers my question - "If a feature says it requires concentration, as Invoke Duplicity does, you can't concentrate on it and a spell simultaneously."

Unearthed Arcana Subclass features - Is "(as if concentrating on spell)" the same as concentrating on a spell?

I have noticed that some of the recent UA subclasses have features that last "until your concentration ends (as if concentrating on a spell)." Wizard Order of Scribes' Manifest Mind and Undead Warlock's Spirit Projection are two examples. While this phrase appears in the MM, I haven't found it...
