[Playtest 2] Player HP needs to be adjustable for each group

Yeah, this also seems pretty good.

[Playtest 2] Player HP needs to be adjustable for each group

People have differing ideas on how beefy PCs should be. Some peope like them to be somewhat fragile to make things less predictable and more dangerous, while others like them to be beefy and durable to avoid random character death. Both opinions are very valid, and I'm personally somewhere in...

[playtest 2] Distressed by rogue damage

The benefits by war outweighed the penalties. There's also haste. So yeah, a flanking rogue could have 3 attacks at 3d6 each as opposed to the 5d6 once per round we have now. Anyways, I don't think the sneak attack damage is that bad, but I do wish they'd try and design so that you'd need a...

    D&D 5E Multiclass in 5E

Currently, you can take a speciality (acolyte/magic-user) to become a pseudo-cleric/wizard. You can be a fighter or a rogue and still get a couple of at-wills from the other two classes, and something that would fit those classes such as a familiar or a sanctified weapon. I think that's a pretty...

    Dual-weapon fighting is extremely lackluster

My take on how it should be: Regular dual wielding doesn't give you any extra damage from your associated ability score. That's what you get for not knowing how to dual wield. If you do have the feat, you get to add your STR/DEX bonus to your main hand weapon. So if both weapons were to hit...

[Playtest 2] Flanking, Combat Advantage and Melee Rogues

Some sort of support for the swashbuckling rogue might be cool, but I actually prefer how rogues are handled now. They aren't dealing sneak attack every round, but when they find a way to properly execute it, boy does it hurt! If a rogue sees a combat it won't be able to find an advantage, it's...

Lack of saving throws against various effects

I just wanted to see how you guys felt about the lack of saving throws or opposed rolls against spells and maneuvers that can actually have a somewhat potent effect. Here's a short list (probably not exhaustive) of these abilities and their effects. FIGHTER MANEUVERS - These only require the...

Why do Halflings get damage bonuses?

Well, one of my players is planning on playing a halfling fighter with the thug background, and he's incredibly happy to see he's not being punished mechanically for his unorthodox choice. I don't think it's an inseparable part of the race, but if they were to lose it I'd want them to have...

    [Playtest 2] Weapons and Armor

They don't want to give some weapons 1d12 and some weapons 2d6, because then 2d6 weapons become the bog standard because of their mechanical superiority, as was the case in some previous edition (3.X). What weapon you use should be a flavor choice for the most part, IMO.

[Playtest 2] Races: Humans too good?

I have no idea what sort of mechanical implications it has, so I can't say whether or not it's overpowered, but from just looking at it I don't like it. It just doesn't feel right, for some reason or another. The +2 is fine, but the +1 across the board is something I strongly dislike.

    D&D 5E [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

My main concern is just how lethal everything looks at level 1. Your typical fighter will have around 12-13 HP, while the other classes will be around 8-10 HP. Searing light, a level 1 spell, deals 3d8 damage (13 on average). A dwarf fighter with a greataxe and deadly strike will deal 3d6 +...

    Advantage and Disadvantage stacking

In a recent Rule of Three it was stated that advantage and disadvantage would be binary; you're either at an advantage/disadvantage or you're not. It doesn't matter how many sources of advantage you have, it's always the same bonus. Likewise, it doesn't matter how many sources of advantage you...

Playtest - Disappearances in the Village

Thanks! We handled the barricades as difficult terrain, requiring double movement to get past. I think granting advantage until your next round is pretty big. For the gnolls it might work since they get advantage themselves, but for 1d6 bonus damage on the orc charge, it's really not worth...

Playtest - Disappearances in the Village

Well, we FINALLY managed to get together for another run, this time the players were level 2! The leveling process naturally took a very short time, and we got straight into the game. The session began by the players reading the scroll they had found during the last run, which said something...

Why the Encounter Powers hate? (Maneuvers = Encounter)

I love the idea behind encounter powers, but not the way they're implemented in 4E. If there was some sort of system that made sense outside a design perspective, I'd be all for them. I'd like to have some sort of high power moves for martial characters that would leave them at a mild fatigue...

    What makes a class?

A class is a mechanically and thematically strong concept that is the central part of a character. A character who focuses above everything else on martial combat is a fighter. Sure, he may use one or two weapons, focus on melee or ranged combat, be a knight or a commoner, but as long as martial...

The Illusionist: Class, Background or Theme?

I'd like wizards to get schools in a similar manner to cleric domains, which would largely determine what sort of spells and abilities they have access to. The illusionist would be one of those schools. If that doesn't work, a theme sounds fine.

    Everything but the racial classes.

    So, Attacks of Oppportunity?

I think they should be available for those that really want them. As a feat, for example. I'd also be cool by having them be fighter only. It'd be a cool and unique mechanic the fighter would have, and it would allow him to be a threat on the battlefield by turning otherwise safe ways into...

Suggestion: Surprise gives advantage/disadvantage on initiative.

I agree. The -20 to the roll is incredibly fiddly. I'd even prefer surprised foes to just be treated as rolling a 1 on their initiative.
