the future woulnd't be to do-able, as theres no way to tell what future will play itself out. maybe the PCs will end up destroying the world, then the fact they walked in there and saw a laser pistol wouldn't make much sense :P

i don't think its metagaming at all, as long as not to much time has passed (or if it would cause some disruption in the battle..i.e. it would have killed someone who has taken another action or had an action taken against him since then)
