Should I let my players kill each other?

Frankly, I think you are wasting your time. You shouldn't have to explain to the player in question that having characters kill each other is ruining the fun for everybody. There may be people who disagree on this, and that's nice and well, but I just wouldn't want to play with them. In my...

    "d20 Lite" games

True20 is quite rules light, while retaining most of the D20 core concepts.

What is your second edition experience (no edition war!!!)

Red Box Set > 1st Edition > 2nd Edition I bought the 2nd edition books the day they came out and remember how everyone in my group was really stoked about the changes and simplifications. To this day, I prefer the way classes were grouped in 2nd edition to any other incarnation of the game...

Do RPGs' Wargaming Aspects Overshadow RPing?

What is gained by drawing a line that separates tactical combat (wargaming) from roleplaying? I see the former as part of the latter. In some campaigns it's the predominant one, in some it doesn't matter much at all. To each his own, no? My concern is that after setting up tactical combat and...

    Your ideal setting

Silvercat, I'm not entirely sure I fully get where you are coming from, but I'll try to answer anyway. I wouldn't say that. I mean, from the characters' POV, the world is worth saving because it's the only one there is, and because maybe they feel they owe it to themselves to try and be "the...

Kalamar - first published 4e setting?!?

It's kinda funny - when I read the design concept of Kalamar, I thought "this is the campaign setting of my dreams", what with all the emphasis on paralleling earth's geological and social development to attain a high degree of realism/believability/whatchammacallit. Well, they say the worst...

    Your ideal setting

Also, while I'm rambling, I'd like to comment on why I think there are only a few "gritty" settings and why all the major WotC settings (including 4e's implied one) tend toward high fantasy. If you skim the replies to the OP's question, you'll find that people who like gritty, deep...

    Your ideal setting

I don't think that there are that many well-done low dark gritty settings out there. The major ones published by WotC (Greyhawk, FR, Eberron) certainly aren't, at least not in my book. Since there’s been some discussion upthread about the meaning and attraction of “grittiness” in a setting, let...

    Your ideal setting

In no particular order: low, somewhat dark and gritty fantasy (at least in the low levels) dark ages feel - lots of ruins, lost knowledge, mysteries and legends magic is rare and unreliable; mages outlawed, operate in secret societies undead are truly scary (like the Fell in Midnight)...

Which version of D&D or D&D-like will you be playing by the end of 2008 ?

We'll be wrapping up our 3.5 campaign by the end of the year. I was looking forward to running the next one under 4e but while I agree with a lot of the design-goals of the new edition, their implementation and the fluff that surrounds them just doesn't work for me. True 20 however is looking...

    Where does True20 break?

Thanks for the replies so far - exactly what I was looking for. If you have more troublesome/broken power (spell) or feat combos, please let me know. J.

    Where does True20 break?

A while back, a thread here brought to my attention the True20 System and I've been reading the revised edition of the ruleset for about a week now. I'm well impressed and am considering it for my next campaign - thanks! To those of you who have played True20: Have you found aspects of the...

How to detain an Eladrin Rogue? ie, teleporting

I wouldn't allow teleportation if the subject is manacled or chained to a wall. Likewise, LOS-rules nonwithstanding, I wouldn't allow teleportation through, say, a keyhole either. The way I envision it, the fey step teleportation is more like accelerated "swoosh"-style movement, as seen in...

    4E - Increased potential for controversy/moral panic?

It seems to me that 4e is actually fairly sanitised so as not to step on the toes of any real world religion. Sure there's devils and demons, but it's pretty clear they are the bad guys you'll go up against. Evil alignments and deities are - by default - not available to player characters...

High-level overview of Pathfinder vs 3.5

Could anyone point me to a high-level overview of the changes that the Pathfinder RPG is introducing, as compared to 3.5? Thanks! J.

How do you create setting maps if you can't draw?

I use the worldbuilder in Civilization 4. You can plonk down gorgeous tiles with your mouse, and it has seperate layers for base terrain, elevation and what is on the tile (i.e. forest), so you can have things like forested tundra hills. A simpler alternative is Hexmapper - just google the...

DnD Game Table- Why doesn't WotC get it?

Like many of the posters upthread DDI was one of the key things in 4e for me, since my party already plays online. And I do think that the overall offering of DDI is indeed pretty good value for money because of the content from Dragon and Dungeon, and access to the full rules database. That...

    Pre-Alpha, really?

I share your suspicion that all is not well at WotC's online division. What we've seen of the character generator and the virtual game-table is underwhelming, and their website isn't anything to brag about either. I still believe they will get enough subscribers who sign up for access to Dragon...

DnD Game Table- Why doesn't WotC get it?

If creating maps - to print out, project onto a table or wall or for use in online play - is what you want to do, there are already half a dozen much more powerful applications available. For example, check out MapTool, which is free.

Warlock's Curse, Fey Pact and a Bag o'Rats...

Never mind the rats - I do share the OP's concern that 1st level characters can just teleport about. Even with line of sight, this is a very powerful way to bypass traps, doors (peek through the keyhole) and other obstacles. Does anybody know the exact limitations on this?
