    D&D 4E 4e requires a battlemat, and I'm okay with it

Since looking at the 4E rules I'm very interested in trying out a game using minis and a battlemap. If the combat rules are not as complicated as 3E I would be happy getting into minis and whatnot. My players have expressed interest in this as well. Can anybody recommend a brand of...

    Nostalgia Campaigns

If we're talking specific modules I'd throw down Quest for the Heartstone fo' shure! The roster of included good and evil characters to play was rad, not to mention the introduction of the Hook Horror. It might also be the toy tie-in that gets my nostalgia going too.

    D&D 4E My 4E Character Sheet

Nice sheet, I like the old school feel of it. The free-form boxes are kinda refreshing. I started using Vicco's Classic Sheet for 3.5E recently, and, while memory is getting dim on this now, it looks like it might be based on a 1st Edition sheet from long ago. The fonts are pretty sweet :-)

    Nostalgia Campaigns

Nostalgia game, eh? I wouldn't bother with anything from 3rd edition unless I felt a burnin' need to feel deeply confused and frustrated during every combat. But I'd scour Ebay to track down 1st edition rule books or maybe even a copy of the Red Books.

    D&D 4E 4e Character Sheet, by Neceros

I'll add my vote to the shingle-sheet option. You could probably trim it down a bit by: - removing the Bags & Containers section (or roll it into the larger Equipment section above) - reducing the Languages box (in my experience most players just have a couple extra) - reducing the Notes area...

    Raise Shields!

This is the first thing that crossed my mind when I first read of this mechanic. I'm glad to hear of your experience on this, as game play sounds like a lot of fun :-)

Another Chris Perkins Interview - 4th Edition Realms

My Realms usage goes back to the older publications. I picked up a copy of the 3E version of the FRCS when it came out but I never actually gamed with it. I simply didn't like most of the new concepts that it shipped with (eg, Shadoweave). After a while it just felt like there was nothing...

What DO you like about 1E AD&D

You're totally right about this! All those whacky exceptions DID add flavour, and in some strange ways created it's own subtext and sometimes unspoken backstory. Think about it, why would a barbarian require soooo much experience just to level up? Maybe the inherent savagery and lack of...

    D&D 4E 4e - Too much change?

Published material can continue in any way you see fit. My campaign is set in the original grey-box FR setting, converted to 3E, and works perfectly. Personally I can't stand the 3E re-make of FR so I don't use it, and probably won't use 4E FR either - though it's more likely I will take the...

    Taller Halflings

The whole "small nunchucks" for "small characters" ruleset really bothered me, enough to completely ignore said rules. So if the height increase mitigates the funky alt.rules for small characters then I'm all for a height increase. I think it would be great to see halflings represented to...

Will you laugh or cry at the gnomes' good-bye party?

I don't see what the big deal is, the odds of gnomes being included in a future Races text is pretty much a given. If after upgrading your campaign to 4E you simply *must* play a gnome then just shoe-horn the version you want (from whatever previous iteration of D&D) and give 'er. Fact is, by...

Honestly, how often have you used gnomes?

I'm not unhappy to see gnomes leave the PHB simply because I have never felt a desire to play one; maybe they don't quite fit in with my own vision of heroic adventurers. I simply can't take them seriously as protagonist heroes. Nor have I ever perceived them as having any kind of iconic...

Dragonborn - will you ban them?

My game follows a fairly Tolkienesque feel (though set in FR) and I intend to ban dragonborn, tieflings, warlords, and warlocks from the standard campaign. If I ever get around to playing an "evil party" then I'll open them up. They otherwise strike me as "evil" characters to play, sort of...

What DO you like about 1E AD&D

As mentioned by others previously, one thing that strikes me was how easy it was to jump in and start playing. Even brand new players could dope out the basics so long as the DM handled all the mechanics. Allowing the DM to adjudicate most things meant the game moved along really quickly; with...

To ALL ENWorlders: Did you play 1E AD&D?

I played 1E back in the late 80s during junior high. Best rule book had to be Deities & Demigods, for all the scantily clad goddesses :-)

    Warlocks and Rogues

The prospect of most characters being unaligned (by default?) is very appealing to me as far as my campaign preferences go. I mean sure, house rules can replace whatever you like but given how much mechanical significance was tied to alignment in earlier game iterations it implies that this...

For Those Upset About The Flavpr Changes

Old school grey-box Forgotten Realms without all the fruity "high fantasy". As far as I can tell the whole point-of-light concept is pretty much inline with early FR material. (And just to clarify, yes, I am one of those greybeards who believes the early grey-box material was the best and that...
