Lankhmar Box Set for Dungeon Crawl Classics!

I highly recommend The Crawler's Companion. Highlights include a dice roller with all the funky dice DCC use, and key tables from the book (fumbles, crits, spells, and so forth).

Character Level Disparity in a group

It varies. When I'm running an old-school D&D game (AD&D 1e, Rules Cyclopedia, most OSR, etc), I don't worry about level differences much at all. Those games are designed to quickly catch lower level players up, and the level differences don't matter nearly as much as they do with D&D 3.x and...

RuneQuest Design Notes; And Getting The Band Back Together

Some Details About Chaosium's Runequest 4th Edition

They're only calling it RQ4 internally, as it's Chaosium's fourth edition. It will be published as RuneQuest.

Chaosium Putting The Band Back Together

Amazon.com has it for $41.61. As for TDM, I think they are excellent stewards of RuneQuest. I've been a huge fan of RQ since RQ2 back in the early 80s (later transitioning to RQ3), but I have to say RQ6 is my favourite edition yet (a common sentiment in my experience), and I'm excited to see...

    13th Age coming to Glorantha

This is very cool. Glorantha has been my favourite setting since something like 1982, and with the astounding Guide to Glorantha out, this is a great time for expanding the player base by adding a popular official system to the mix. The draft outline has some interesting ideas, like an Orlanthi...

What's up with international shipping on Kickstarter?!?

Personally, shipping costs to Canada have lead to me passing on a number of Kickstarters. I am occasionally willing to pay $40 - $45 for shipping, but the RPG has to be at the very top of my buy-list, a must-have that I will directly, frequently use. That's a pretty short list. Another option...

    25th anniversary reprint of HeroQuest

They can't, not without changing the name. They no longer have the trademark on the name HeroQuest in the US.

What stops WotC from *also* selling 3.5?

Have you checked out the condition of those books under $10, the ripped covers, marked up pages, and stains? I've been rebuilding my collection of 1e materials, focusing solely on books which are near-mint in condition, and I can tell you I pay more than a newly printed book from WoTC would cost.

    Burning wheel for dark fantasy

Burning Wheel would be a good fit, as it starts out fairly gritty. I'm starting up a new BW campaign myself, and one of the setting options I'm pondering is a home-brew world inspired by Lamentations of the Flame Princess: Grindhouse Edition. I'd use the system as-is, for the most part. About...

    Upset over incompatible gaming styles?

While I couldn't eat it every day, I do loves me some Chinese food. And why do gamers so readily reach for some variety of food metaphor? I'm participating in/watching multiple threads on a multiple RPG fora right now in which there's at least one food metaphor being used.

    Upset over incompatible gaming styles?

Would you commit to eating Chinese food every week for months or years? Would you give up ever eating pizza during those months or years? After more than three decades of gaming, I know what I like and what I don't. I know I don't like railroads. I know I don't like games with wall-to-wall...

    Zero to Hero!

I agree, and I've played in and run a number of campaigns where the PC were virtually, and sometimes literally, guaranteed not to die. What's needed isn't the threat of death, or even, I would argue, the threat of loss. What's needed is a source of tension. The threat of loss is a good one, one...

    Zero to Hero!

Urk! Ok FS, I just re-read the post of yours to which I replied, and you do mention this rule, right in the portion I quoted. That'll teach me to post at 4:30 in the morning. I still disagree with you in general, but I had to clarify this.

    Zero to Hero!

I don't know why people keep forgetting this part: "Death: When you take damage that reduces your current hit points to your bloodied value expressed as a negative number, your character dies." I've had this happen to me a few times. For example, at the start of my current campaign, my...

    D&D 5E The all-inclusive 4/5E DDI

In addition to the interesting reversal on piracy-friendly ebooks, speculation on an all ebook future has me pondering what Wizards might do about the Game Day and Encounters programs. If they simply stop publishing books and selling them through game stores, the stores will obviously have no...

    D&D 5E The all-inclusive 4/5E DDI

The big difference between this DRM and what Blizzard and EA are doing is the majority of people don't need to bypass the DRM, only one person, which will happen. Consider the current state of affairs; in order to pirate, say, Heroes of Shadow, someone would need to cut off the spine of a book...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

I have problems with Essentials, and I really wish Wizard's hadn't gone down this path. However, compatibility isn't one of those problems. I've seen multiple groups with a mix of Essentials and Classic classes with no compatibility issues. I've seen mixed results with this approach. My teen...
