your homebrew - what's your motivation?

I second 'the act of creation'. And of course I find it fun to write my own ideas regarding 'my world' down.

    Please help - cliches needed

    * Dwarves don't like elves, and call them treehuggers * Elves don't like dwarves becaus they don't like trees * Dwarves only fight using axes * Wizards of level 10+ are evil, because power corrupts * When you travel the 'endless sea' you might come to some 'unkown, eternal realm' * There are...

What inspired the D&D magic rules and do you like it?

Regarding the Proper Name Spells I think every campaign setting that does use the D&D magic system should include 'new names' for spells like Bigbys.... or Mordekainens... I mean, there was no Bigby or Mordekainen in Eberron. So renaming them to something linked to Eberron is a good idea in my...

    What happened to the story?

I DM-ed a one-shot adventure, the players were the players of my regular group (including the DM) and people entirely new to the game. Afterwards, they all told me they really liked the story, it had many plot hooks, there were moral choices, there was intrigue, drama, and so on. It took me...

    What happened to the story?

I never played 2e, my experiences with 3e have been very good (story-wise) The only thing one really needs is a good DM. - but I guess this is the case for every system / version. 3e Introduced the OGL, and along with the OGL many, many publishers who publish 'flavor' books. If you are...

What inspired the D&D magic rules and do you like it?

So you think that the current magic system is difficult? I must admit that I did not understand the magic system the first few times I played D&D. But some of the guys I played with already 'knew' how it worked, so after a few instructions I understood. But when nobody knows the rules it might...

What inspired the D&D magic rules and do you like it?

This is what I meant by 'no magic' in my startpost of this thread -> no PC's should use magic. The storyteller might add some supernatural things here and there, be it 'magic', be it 'divine intervention' or something similar. This is the way I implement it in my homebrew.

What inspired the D&D magic rules and do you like it?

Dont' know, I would certainly like it, but others, and people new to the game might be confused by different magic systems in the core rules

    Who ELSE buys PDFs?

I buy a few PDF's a year (form rpgnow). I like them. I recently bought The Taverner's Trusty Tome and Steam and Steel. I do not use these books every game session, but I use them to inspire me with (new) ideas.

What inspired the D&D magic rules and do you like it?

This kind of skill system has been applied to some Computer RPGs. I believe Divine Divinity has it, and if I remember it correctly, Morrowind too. It seems a nice system, but it does not have the great diversity of spells the current D&D magic system has, but I think I like it.

What inspired the D&D magic rules and do you like it?

Our DM house-ruled that wizards did not need spellbooks any more. You are right when indicating that 'prepared' spells do not feel as 'physycal' as spell point / fatigue systems. I think however that this is a matter of taste, some people may like backfire or fatigue rules. Some of the quys a...

What inspired the D&D magic rules and do you like it?

Interesting, thank you for pointing to the books from Jack Vance. :) We might continue this thread by asking: should D&D 4e include another magic system?

What inspired the D&D magic rules and do you like it?

I am wondering what inspired the caster level, spell levels, spell slots and such. Or is it just something Gygax invented? What inspired the D&D magic rules? I sometimes see it referred to as a 'vancian' system, what does 'vancian' mean? And do you like it the way it is? or would you like a...

    4 classes, no multi-classing

Bard - rogue / arcane spells / support / spokesman Ranger - rogue/ archer / scout / 2nd tank / animal companion Barbarian - tank / fighter Druid - divine spells / support / animal companion This party might be quite powerful, it only lacks a true wizard or sorcerer. I think that running a small...

Do you use Internet Homebrew settings for your games? (include links)

I would not easily use any campaign setting or ideas I find on a random website. But I do use, read and even buy pdf's on rpgnow.com that have good reviews and use them now and than. I also tend to download and read homebrew settings and ideas that are listed on other sites and have good...

Is it wrong for a game to have an agenda?

Herein lies one of the problems, you talk about univeral truths, but for some people 'your truth' is not 'their truth'. Even if any sane person agrees on you point of view, there might be others who think otherwise. About games with an agenda: most games do have an implict or explicit agenda, as...

    Evil Parties - and Evil PC's - A Discussion

I really like the character you described, I would not know however if her alignment would be LE... My experience with players who play evil characters is that they go the Stupid Evil way: One character was a Cleric of Bane, who muttered 'Bane' every two minutes and had an unstoppable desire to...

    Armor Optimization Feats

I like them, but I think our DM would not allow them, because a +1 AC and a +1 max dex bonus appears overpowered when comparing it to 'dodge'
