Exactly. Throw in some art, some writing, some cartography, etc,.

D&D General D&D Summer School Course

I agree, though I was only referring to the first day or so...just to get a sense of the game. I am going on the assumption that I will have complete newbies and I am worried that any task , unsupervised, would far worse that a day or two of sitting in a circle together. I was also planning on...

I have seen that before. Thanks though.

D&D General D&D Summer School Course

Thanks for the responses. I may have already said this, but the tough part is that I only have 10 day (20 hours) total to work with. That is why it is hard to use the kids as DMs (barring past experience). You need at least some experience getting a feel for the game before turning them loose...

D&D General D&D Summer School Course

I am bumping this thread as we are entering year two as I would love to hear ideas. Once again, the big issues is the class size, which should be around 20. How do you keep everyone busy, especially if the teacher is DMing the other group and not circulating. These are 11-14 year olds and they...

    Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals

The reality that there are players who consider this a bad thing is baffling to me. This kind of approach is why so many new players (and returning older players like myself) have returned to the game, no longer overwhelmed with mechanical bloat reserved for the power-gamers. I can't tell you...

Great Moments In D&D For Kids

Running a summer school D&D class. The great thing is that we don't have many resources, but it is so easy to make do with whatever we have. I have two groups, and this week, while one was playing, the others were writing their own mini-adventures, so they will be DMing for each other next week.

It's FREE RPG DAY, So Head To Your Local Game Store Today!

My local store was very busy. Sale on all games. No limit on free stuff. I grabbed about 4 items and also bought something. Seemed to work exactly as intended.

Flipping the Table: Did Removing Miniatures Save D&D?

It is great that the game supports both those who use minis and those who don't, but connecting not using minis with the rise of streaming games (many/most of which do in fact use gridded combat) seems like a pretty big jump.

D&D General D&D Summer School Course

It is an enrichment class....just for fun. While we do have some classes that are more academic/remedial in nature, the majority of our kids sign up because it is fun. I have run a board game "class" for about 5-6 years now. Basically, we just play games. Kids love it (and learn a lot about...

D&D General D&D Summer School Course

I have a group of kids that play at lunch, and that is more of a typical group. This would be a class so I would tend to side more with providing a broader based experience. I was thinking of taking the first week and letting them dabble in a variety of aspects. Maybe group kids together in...

D&D General D&D Summer School Course

Just got approval to run a 2 week RPG/D&D summer school course for middle school kids. Would love to hear ideas on course title, description, etc. I want something that will grab kids who have never played, but also smart about those parents that still harbor the old stereotypes of the game...

Find An Adventure Wth Adventure Lookup

If the creators of this site are here, let me say thank you, as this is an awesome resource. As someone who just got back into D&D after more than 30 years, I don't have the adventure knowledge base when trying to "adventure-bash" and this resource really helps when you want to find a resource...

WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store

Not referring to their presence. I was referring to how they ran their games. Is is possible that someone isn't a very good DM and is terrific at design? Sure. But, when that is all I have to go on, it is going to temper my opinion. As I said, if they have lots of great design work on the...

WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store

For the record, I watched her during the Stream of Annihilation as well as 3-4 other times on Twitch and I was not impressed at all. To avoid being sexist, I was not impressed with Rutenberg either. I give both great kudos for helping to promote the game, but to me, they were curious choices...

    How big's the RPG market?

As someone who has done just that, with 12 year olds no less, I couldn't disagree more. It is this accessibility (relative to PF or 4e) that has brought many back to the game. There is more depth if you want to get into it, but you can grab the basic rules with a rudimentary understanding of...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Explores Downtime Activities

I think that is the entire point of the Advantage/Disadvantage system. That is always DM discretion. If my players can justify something via good roleplaying...whether it be their background or a personality trait or whatever, then I figure I should reward them as such.
