D&D 5E Using proficiency instead of dex for ac

I mention the Rogue in my post. Monks don't need STR - basically all of their in built attack options (Unarmed & Monk weapons) are Finessable, and as such they get a nod of acknowledgement that DEX picks up their AC.....plus monks have loads of defensive and mobility options, so maxing out AC...

D&D 5E Using proficiency instead of dex for ac

I can easily Drop Dex.....Is my character capable of doing a backflip or pickpocketing a drunk? No? DEX < 12...... :D Ok, but seriously you'll be decoupling the melee decision balance for any class that isn't a rogue (because finesse weapon). If your AC increases with Prof, why would you limit...

    High Strength Monk

    1) Simple design principles. CON isn't an attack stat, STR is. DEX also is, but the trade-off is lower damage weapons (and no rage damage). So in order for a Barb to have maxed Attack AND max CON AND high damage dice weapons, they need to max 3 main stats, which is an extreme and rare design...

    D&D 5E [5e] Weapon Damage Option

So taking aside all the extra 'attack action' options you've got.....I'm a little confused with the intention here. Firstly, A Fighter (or at least someone built for melee combat) already does more damage than a wizard - a STR bonus of 5 is equivalent to adding 2d4, plus they hit more often...

    High Strength Monk

I think any approach would depend on further clarity. 1) Why does the player want to play a monk? What part of the class is desired - the thematic elements (Unarmed fighting and wearing a robe)? Or is it more of the mechanical elements (Deflect missiles, increased run speed, the psuedo-mystical...

D&D 5E Homebrew: 2 ideas to improve fighter out of combat effectiveness

Personally, I think the fighter is a great class for Exploration and Social in certain types of games – they are the class that allows the maximum character input, and where backstory has the largest narrative effect. The structure of the class simply does not get in the way of the character and...

D&D 5E Preferred way to build your characters:

Sooo….a nice block of replies and some interesting spreads of replies too. Some quick observations about the numbers. I should’ve put “Role First” as one fo the options as judging by a number of the replies saying “Mix”, there was a definite theme of looking at the party makeup and picking a...

D&D 5E The Fighter Extra Feat Fallacy

I'd disagree with that. Flaws and low stats can often be more fun - I'd certainly turn down 6 18s. A dragonborn with 6 dex? That's just slapstick gold right there. And if you haven't played a character with 7 or less in wisdom, you haven't lived.....hehe

    D&D 5E Whip Feat

When you unpick all the features of the various weapons in the weapon table, you can just about find the rules to determine where the weapon balance lies. The whip is a dice underpowered, and so making it a d6 would bring it into line with 90% of the other weapons. So the problem you've got...

D&D 5E Preferred way to build your characters:

After seeing a couple of conversations recently about stats/skills/building characters – I started to notice a couple of things. Firstly: players have very varied ways of approaching stats, skills, and character motivations (sort of like a multi-dimensional chicken and egg continuum). Secondly...

D&D 5E The Fighter Extra Feat Fallacy

Actually, it doesn't matter in this case. Specific Beats General: it's mentioned specifically that Tika is a Fighter (as is Artemis), and therefore is exempt from 'requirements' alluded to in the "General" fighter class. Extrapolating from that - any character which could be designed with...

    D&D 5E Best Non-GWM, Non-SS, Non-PM, Non-CE Damagers

Gender verisimilitude in weapon choice? Really?

    D&D 5E Best Non-GWM, Non-SS, Non-PM, Non-CE Damagers

Almost any major martial build with high STR and shield master. Not only do I get a big uptick from the high likelihood of having Advantage on all my attacks, I also get all the bonus damage my teammates do as a result of having advantage for free on their turn.

    D&D 5E D&D Videogames- Do you want a mobile/console game?

I voted both. My reasons being that I think for gamers that want heavy mechanics and broad party based play that minimises some of the deeper character focus of single player "witcher" type games or mmos, the more casual pick up and play interactions with mobile synergies quite well. While I'm...

D&D 5E [5e] Melee Tempest Cleric: STR or DEX?

I would always say: look to your character. If you envisage him, in the past and in the future, being a big physical presence, grabbing bad guys by the shirt front and throwing them over tables, or jumping across ravines to shove allies out the way of falling rocks....go strength. If they are...

    D&D 5E Does a D&D Videogame have to be turn-based?

Yeah, that is a bit of a risk - but firstly you'd need to build in a decent amount of dev time to get something like a ballpark probability spread. For example, I remember playing Windows Golf FOREVER! in the early 90's (We didn't have a lot of money and it came with the crap PC a family friend...

D&D 5E When do you think the revised fighter will be released?

Not sure I understand how limiting smites to smites per round affects Damage imbalance. At level 11, a Paladin can cast a maximum of 10 smites between long rests. With 2 attacks per round and a "rough" 50% hit chance, A Paladin must make 10 Attack Actions between long rests to maximise damage...

    D&D 5E Does a D&D Videogame have to be turn-based?

How to trick a Player into thinking probability is not probability while maintaining D&D mechanics. So – a quick bit of background. Years ago, a few friends and I had a massive nostalgia kick and invested in Heroquest! However, after a few play-throughs it became harder for the game to test the...

    D&D 5E Does a D&D Videogame have to be turn-based?

In light of my gloom ridden post above – believe it or not, I do have an idea or 2, with varying levels of feasibility. 1) Design the entire game around failure. Unlock content rather than prohibit it should you fail a skill check or lose a fight. Make success satisfying (“I overcame this...
