Penny Arcade Podcast with Mike Mearls

I played 4th as soon as it came out, but only the once. My initial reaction was "wow, this is a lot of fun right off the bat! This is great, and I can see why they chose this direction". I found a group of people willing to play, but after some web-research decided pathfinder was a safer bet for...

Penny Arcade Podcast with Mike Mearls

I think you're right, but its slightly more complicated... I think they're intentionally bringing up larger issues that the community is digesting and making sure those issues are framed in a way that's good for WOTC. I believe they like where the game is going, but i think there's a bit of PR...

Penny Arcade Podcast with Mike Mearls

I like the PA guys a lot, watch most of their TV show even, but I think it would be a little naive to think that their reaction to this play-test is completely straight-up. They realize WOTC's business model, like the guys (Chris Perkin's Dmed their DND PODcasts), and are looking for a different...

Penny Arcade Podcast with Mike Mearls

How do people, generally, handle HP restoration in traditional DnD games? Do you buy lots of potions? Buy your healing afterwards from an NPC? What is the most common mechanic from the supporters of the dogmatic 'zero to nil passive HP regen'/'healing surges are bad' crowd? Do people behind this...

D&D 5E And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

You're absolutely right, we don't know yet, but its a lot of fun to speculate. But is that really what it sounds like? If so does the fighter only get to use ,say, 1 d6 for a trip and 1 d6 for damage? Does this means the fighter will end up with x +d6 dmg as he levels, and only have to choose...

D&D 5E And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

The numbers get really big really quickly, I still think they should scale up less quickly than 'Surprise attack'. If you have Xd6 CS dice to spend, does that mean you can do x different actions as well as your regular attack in a single turn?

D&D 5E And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

The players engagement with the mechanic will be very different, but the point's not really worth pressing. But really? what else can you do with dice? At some point you're just going to either be ... 'modifying a roll' 'rolling more dice' Obviously there's a lot of roleplaying options you...

D&D 5E And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

The gap is bigger than you're making it to be. Adding a random element to the system has a bigger effect than a simple modifier, both in the math and psychologically. Not to mention this system allows dice to be be used not only as dice, but also spent as tokens or counters and its still a...

D&D 5E And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

The trick is finding and executing scalable yet mechanically simple solutions to these sorts of problems, but yes, you've managed to crack 'game design'...

D&D 5E And Lo, the Fighter Did Get a Shtick of his Own... COMBAT SUPERIORITY!

Anyone worried about the amount of damage this mechanic might end up spitting out? Sounds like a flexible 'sneak attack' option that doesn't require any sort of positional requirement. I can live with a fighter doing more damage than a rogue overall in an encounter (more fight-y, less positional...

D&D 5E DMs Expectations for Next

I think this is something that's fairly high up on the developers aims for the system. I think it will be a nice irony if the "4th ed style" module they end up releasing becomes a mainstay just because it helps make combat fun. Especially if things like AoO stay out of the core rules. When...

    Cute animated short.

You have to admit, this is RP related :D http://youtu.be/4qCbiCxBd2M Maybe there's a better sub-forum for this sort of thing?

    Dungeon brain-teasers

You make a good point, and you're right. I'm not really worried that they've heard the riddle before (although I doubt they'll know all of them), I don't think the 'buzz of success' for solving the riddle quickly will diminish all that much if it takes them 10 minutes, or if they know the answer...

    Dungeon brain-teasers

nogray: Great tips, I'll keep those in mind when they land in my dungeon plans, and you're completely correct about the ball puzzle, i'll have to reword that a little bit. ps. What about spell specific puzzle's like Pathfinder's 'Crypt of Everflame' and the pool of 100 keys (one being magical)...

    D&D 5E Another D&D Next Playtest Survey

I just don't see how its possible to make both camps happy at this point. They've essentially designed two completely different games, and have promised to collapse the two into one, and still keep both parties completely happy. At some point there's got to be a 4th ed community generated...

    Dungeon brain-teasers

Was thinking of throwing a few of these into a dungeon to mix things up. What do people think of using them in general? Are they a good idea in a dungeon? do they ever backfire. I'd never use them as the only way to progress, just an optional route. A few I've stolen from a good reddit...

    Mike Mearls interview at Slashdot

"Not only do i want my cake, but I don't want anyone else to get a slice either" It sounds like they're going to expand spells to vancian as well as 'cast on demand' . The way I've been rationalizing it is, instead of your wizard having to carry around a crossbow all the time, for when he runs...

    D&D 5E Another D&D Next Playtest Survey

I got all the love in the world for 4th players... but you have to realize... it wasn't making them any money. There's a reason they seem to be doing a 180 here, and its hard to blame them.
