When did We Stop Trusting Game Designers?

ENWorld ("here") is in a really awkward position, because it was explicitly founded as being dedicated to one specific edition: 3E ("Eric Noah's 3E Site"). 4E threw that mission statement into a tailspin, because you can't both be the current edition and 3E at the same time anymore (like it was...

    Holmes Edition - Weapons Question

You know, I did play with that rule in Holmes basic, and in later years I keep thinking that I just imagined it. I can never re-find it in the book these days, what page is it on? In any event, you really do want to ignore that rule. It's sort of a mangled attempt at simplifying "who strikes...

    All D&D trolls are male?

Hypothetically, the female could appear as a different type of monster (hags being a good prospect). For example: All dryads are female, are satyrs are male, procreation occuring between the two types. (Per the very old Dragon "Sex in D&D" article).

    All D&D trolls are male?

I believe the "Orcs of Thar" Gazetteer had a nation of trolls (Trollhattan) ruled by a queen troll.

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

I think there's quite a bit of guidance. 1E DMG has an entire section on "Placement of Monetary Treasure". The Appendix A random dungeon tables basically have every treasure either trapped (1-8 on d20) or hidden (9-20 on d20) -- starting with invisibility and working up from there. 1E DMG p...

    Why do 4e combats grind?

I would expect on average a limit of 7, with different people having a limit from 5 to 9. I would think 10 to be too much for most anyone. See the "Magic Number 7 plus or minus 2" rule: The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What are some of your favorite Magic Items from previous editions?

Do you mean a Short Sword of Quickness? That was originally in 1E Unearthed Arcana.

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

But that's purely a matter of taste. Even the 3E DMG has a section called "Tailored vs. Status Quo" adventure design, that supports either philosophy. One thing that I do notice between editions is that if you use the 3E random encounter tables, they always result in an encounter exactly...

Where Has All the Magic Gone?

It was abstracted away. Common arc to the evolution of games: Original creators interested in both flavor and mechanics together, looking for mechanics that evoke a certain atmosphere. Later designers get more focused on the numbers and mechanics that play on those numbers. IMO it's easier...

That is what Supergnome said in post #36. "For any crazy idea, someone believes it."

No More Boring Combats Ever (Edition-Neutral!)

IMO: That wouldn't work with my friends, it would irritate them. None of my friends like WAHOO movies, TV shows, or books. And my gaming buddies assume that "game" means something they can master and, properly played, definitively win. I introduced one of my older friends to D&D the other...

No More Boring Combats Ever (Edition-Neutral!)

I agree with this. I think that KM is battling the axiomatic problem that game != story. I think that taking this program to its conclusion results in something that doesn't look like a game anymore.

    So we disagree about that.

    Falling Damage and Stoneskin

Well, two problems with that argument. (a) You're quoting a source (RC) that didn't exist when Skip was writing. Rules Compendium is suspect in that it changed a lot of stuff at the end of 3.x. (b) If you're going to get rules-lawyerish, you're not quoting everything that the core rules say...

    Full Attacks and AoO Poll

Agree with DG. Full attack doesn't provoke. However, each individual ranged attack within provokes. 4 missiles shot = 4 AOO's.

Into The Fire!--Contrasting Analysis of 4E and 3.5E

Nitpick: Consensus is that GSL ~ d20 STL, and that there is no analogy to the OGL. I'm pretty sure I could look up a WOTC quote that cops to that.
