OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

They would have a 25% chance of winning their first two fights. Losing and surviving are two entirely different things. Especially when you are playing Combat as Sport. CaS will commonly have a lost fight turn into a capture, a flight, or the enemy simply walking away after proving their...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

Winter's Daughter and Hole in the Oak were fantastically made. Along with Tomb of the Serpent Kings - they are the easiest to run modules I've had thus far. :)

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

I would hope that everyone experements (maybe even wildly) at their homes and with their groups. Part of the fun of playing in a fantasy world is figuring out how to do crazy fantasy stuff. We didn't have a system in our game for how to steer a floating mote of rock or what it takes to divert a...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

The best way to bring new players into OSR, in my experience, is to invite them. :) Tabletop RPGs thrive on the fellowship of gathering with people around a table and creating fun memories. Doesn't matter if it's D&D, Ysgarth, Paranoia, Nephilim, Eclipse Phase, or some game your friend made...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

This is a non statement. There are jerks in every community. It isn't an OSR issue that jerks exist; it's a human issue.

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

Based on what input? This isn't how it was in '82 when I first played it, and it still isn't true 40 years later. Indiana Jones was careful when navigating the temple, stealing the idol, and getting the heck out. But I wouldn't call the character a coward.

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

Yep. And perpetuating these stereotypes contributes to maintaining said perceptions. I'm saying that we should stop publicly dercying "OSR neckbeards" - therefore keeping the meme going for any new people who visit the board - and get on with talking about the game we all love.

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

You can argue that, but I don't think it's a strong argument. Our OSR group consists of nearly 40 players now and there are more and more people in their teens and 20s joining than older folks. Maybe the local vibe where you live and play has an issue with "people aren't playing OSR", but that...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

There's a danger in associating a game type with a type of person. That's stereotyping and is a slippery slope. There are inclusive and exclusive people of all stripes, and who play all versions of D&D. Casting aspersions on those who advocate a particular version of our game is perpetuating...

D&D 5E Find the Path. What? Why is this a 6th level spell?

DCC is a fairly recent game. It's still in print and I would highly recommend it. I've always had fun trying to figure out demographics for my game worlds. Is a wizard who can cast fireball as common as a general practicioner or as rare as a brain surgeon? The answer to this will have a huge...

D&D 5E Find the Path. What? Why is this a 6th level spell?

Totally agreed. And I practice this in many of my campaign worlds. Dugneon Crawl Classics has a great chart that shows how common characters with levels should be. 0th Level Characters are 95% of the world population 1st Level Characters are "Experts in their Field" (2 in 100) 2nd Level...

Pirates of Drinax I'm running this Traveller campaign right now. But I'm having to work very hard at not being buried by the cognative load. There are 4 hardback books and about 10 more PDF books covering this campaign. It's sweeping in scale, beautiful in execution, and utterly overwhelming in...

D&D 5E Find the Path. What? Why is this a 6th level spell?

As a cleric spell, it's not too terribly difficult to re-prepare this spell. But it has suffered under the same heavy handed treatment as many other spells.

    OSR Good 'Modern-Feeling' Adventures?

Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh is a legit AD&D adventure. It's basically a Scooby Doo mystery.

    D&D 5E PC Exceptionalism

No, you really don't. Not unless you have such a burning inferiority complex that you can't imagine an amazing story with anyone else at the table having a character more powerful than yours. And that's just sad.

    D&D 5E PC Exceptionalism

The existence of Captain Marvel doesn't make Daredevil unexceptional. You don't need to be the most powerful thing in your universe in order to be special or to have amazing stories.

D&D General Do players even like the risk of death?

The best, most epic campaign I've played in the last decade was Out of the Abyss. We had 16 character deaths in that campaign, with 6 players at the table. It was absolutely thrilling. The single character who survived the entire ordeal is a legend in our game group to this day.

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

My West Marches B/X game has players ranging from 16 to 60-years old. So it's not terrible at bringing in new gamers.

    D&D General Would you fequent a gamer's hangout/bar?

Our town (Austin, Tx) has a number of gamer-specialty pubs and clubs. Vigilante Gastropub, Emrald Tavern, etc. We are very lucky.
