D&D 5E Mordenkainen's Sword is Limp and Made of Tinfoil

Meh. I think it's terrible with or without concentration. Remember that 5E is extremely stingy with high-level spell slots; a wizard will never have more than a single 7th level slot, unless he's 20th level. Who is crazy enough to spend such a valuable and limited resource on what amounts to an...

    D&D 5E General Feats Discussion

I feel that feats have struck a great middle ground: not too good to automatically take instead of ability boosts, but good enough to add interesting and mechanically significant wrinkles to your character concept. If I want to create a swashbucklery duelist, for instance, there are several...

D&D 5E Elves, Wizards, Sorcerers, Charisma

Thanks for all the replies; I see this is a contentious idea. I appreciate the view that elves shouldn't have a CHA bonus, especially those very well-argued, like Lancelot's. However, I still stand by my impression that CHA-based spellcasting classes are a better fit for elves than scholarly...

D&D 5E The Multiverse is back....

I agree and I've posted similar thoughts. If we look at contemporary domestic politics in the West, I'd say that the main divide is on a law/chaos axis: things like conservativism vs liberalism, state vs individual, and similar contentious topics. Foreign policy isn't any different. Major powers...

D&D 5E Elves, Wizards, Sorcerers, Charisma

Musing on ability bonuses for various races, I asked myself: "Why don't elves--except for the drow, that is--have increased Charisma?" Right there in the second paragraph of their PHB entry, not counting the in-fiction excerpt, it says: "With their unearthly grace and fine features, elves...

D&D 5E The Multiverse is back....

Seems to me that terms like "good" and "evil" add to the confusion. Hence pemerton's problem with the notion that goodness can be flawed. How can unadulterated good be flawed? If it's flawed, it isn't good, at least not "unadulteratedly" so, right? However, good in D&D parlance translates to...

D&D 5E Moon Circle Druid Play Report

As many have said already, a lot of it depends on the frequency of short rests. Moon Circle druids will be much more powerful in groups that tend to rest a lot.

    D&D 5E Greyhawk?

Actually, my dear Thaumaturge, you have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon.

D&D 5E Spells: the Good, the Bad, and the Downright Orcish Grandmother

So, 5E is the first edition that introduced the concept of clinical death, right?;)

D&D 5E The Multiverse is back....

Yes, in 2E at least, and I presume earlier as well, there were spells that allowed you to detect alignment of every creature. Also, as far as I know, it's a 3.0 thing as well. I don't know if it was left that way in 3.5, but 3.0 PHB details such mechanics.

D&D 5E The Multiverse is back....

Conceive of themselves? No. Many generally "evil" people don't consider themselves such. Though I understand your point upthread on absolutism of D&D alignment. When a certain in-game mechanic absolutely identifies a being as good or chaotic for instance, it's hard, or even impossible, to allow...

    D&D 5E Greyhawk?

As someone who started gaming during 2E, well after Greyhawk heyday, I'd appreciate if a kind soul were to tell why it is such a well-regarded setting. I know the basics, sure, I've read about it online, but I've never really understood what makes the setting tick, what is it that engenders such...

D&D 5E The Multiverse is back....

I would like to point that this is maybe a product of DMs and players being too set in their ways sometimes? Or maybe it's that D&D, as a predominantly heroic sword&sorcery game, isn't really all that well-suited to address the finer points of morality. That said, I don't see why a given...

D&D 5E Spells: the Good, the Bad, and the Downright Orcish Grandmother

You're right! I didn't catch that. Yeah, it's a terrible spell. If subsequent damage were also increased, it would be a pretty solid choice for warlocks (I'd say the name of the spell is a rather obvious hint) when he can think of nothing else to cast. Warlocks always use the highest spell...

D&D 5E So, thoughts on the Paladin now?

Ah yes. Silly me. I kept thinking about paladin-exclusive stuff and came up with nothing.

    D&D 5E Please Support Eberron!

Agreed. I wanted to add that Eberron manages all this without ever feeling kitchen-sinky, which is a common problem with settings that try to provide too many different regions/flavours. I think it may be the best setting ever published for D&D. Dark Sun comes close, but it is too specific to...

D&D 5E So, thoughts on the Paladin now?

What feature is this? I can't seem to remember.

D&D 5E Spells: the Good, the Bad, and the Downright Orcish Grandmother

Witchbolt isn't that bad a spell. Seems to me it was made with warlocks in mind as primary users. They have a low number of spell slots that are always of their highest level, refreshable on a short rest cycle. So a 7th level warlock could zap an enemy with 4d12 the entire battle expending only...

D&D 5E Changing the Skill Check Paradigm

Nothing stopping them, right? I understand what you're getting at, though. Investigation can be handy with certain types of players who tend to get stuck a lot. Or with overly railroady DMs.

D&D 5E Changing the Skill Check Paradigm

I agree. I really dislike Investigation and would like to see it removed. Easy enough to house rule however. If a PC is investigating a scene, I want to hear what is it he's trying to do. "I investigate" is just as meaningless as "I handle an animal" or "I survive" ;)
