D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

I don't necessarily mind Rangers having spellcasting, per se. I do think Ranger magic should be different, but not in the handwavey "well you get your magic from a deep connection with nature but uh you cast spells exactly like a Wizard." It should be actually different, a Ranger should not...

D&D (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

I can't really agree with the idea that a hand-to-hand combatant should not be able to stand on the frontlines, so if that's what you mean by "tank," I'm afraid I disagree. The Rogue is one thing-- it's entire shtick is skirmishing, and taking advantage of enemies distracted by the party...

    D&D (2024) Playtest 6: Stealth Rules

As someone who is currently trying to write stealth rules for my own game, I certainly sympathize with the difficulty of writing such rules, but yes, there's a lot that feels weird here. I'm not sure why they're so insistent on the Invisibility condition being involved, and the only explanation...

    D&D (2024) WotC D&D Comunity Update for June 8th.

Yeah, fair enough. Ultimately this is just quibbling over terminology to a certain degree. I feel like their caginess over giving an actual name to revision will just be confusing however, not to mention futile. Nature and gamers alike abhor a vacuum, and if WotC refuses to actually name it ( I...

D&D (2024) Jeremy Crawford discusses what are the 2024 Fitfh Edition Core Rulebooks.

Unfortunately this isn't the case; the popular Japanese TTRPG Sword World is currently on its 2.5 edition, explicitly called as such, as you can see on its cover art:

    D&D (2024) WotC D&D Comunity Update for June 8th.

To paraphrase a popular tweet: "My 'One D&D is not a new edition' t-shirt is raising a lot of questions already answered by my t-shirt." I don't know if I fully subscribe to the idea that "If you're explaining, you're losing," but I feel the problem here is that the changes they've already...

    D&D (2024) Graze on a miss questions

I find it easy to imagine how the damage happens. Since hit points represent luck and stamina as much as meat damage, graze damage is just the attacks being so hard to avoid that the target is using up all their luck to just-barely dodge it. I'm sure you can picture many fights like this from...

D&D (2024) New One D&D Weapons Table Shows 'Mastery' Traits

I do approve of the idea to try and make sure every weapon has some kind of value or unique virtue, so it will be interesting to see how it works. I've been working on my own game and came up to the same problem, so I also added a number of weapon maneuvers. I did add a DoaM maneuver, but I've...

D&D General How would you redo 4e?

I'm actually working on a 4e-inspired system right now(it has other inspirations too), and I have some similar ideas. Bounded accuracy is in, fairly similar to 5e although I've adjusted it a bit. Classes and subclasses are separated in my system, classes are overall simpler and focused on...

    D&D 5E D&D Direct: WotC's 2023 Announcement Showcase Livestream

Well si-jil is the correct pronunciation for the word in English, so I don't think anyone can be blamed for pronouncing it that way, but I guess they've decided to lean into the mistake for the place name. Personally I would have changed the spelling to Sigal or Sigul if I wanted it pronounced...

Indie Publishers, what are you working on for 2023?

Never published before, but I hope to do so this year. I was working on a heavily-modified 5e game for the past couple of years, and then the OGL debacle happened... in any case, I quickly realized I didn't really need 5e for my game, considering how much I had already changed. It was initially...

    D&D General Asian D&D

Just in terms of appealing to the Japanese market, I think the idea that an Asian-themed product would be better is a bit of a misunderstanding. Sword World is very western fantasy (filtered through Japanese tastes), CoC is not especially designed for "Asian" settings, D&D is still popular...

    D&D General Asian D&D

I mean I'm not an expert and I don't have sales numbers in front of me, but just going off what I've heard, CoC is the biggest seller overall, while Sword World is the biggest home-grown TTRPG in Japan. As for translation, I imagine it's just a problem of cost vs. opportunity. For the same...

    D&D General Asian D&D

To be clear, I live in Japan, and I've been to Japanese gaming stores. It would be incorrect to say 5e isn't present in Japan, it does actually have a fairly prominent placement in the stores I've been in. At the same time, it's just one of the big boys, rather than THE TTRPG. As you mentioned...

    D&D General Asian D&D

Interestingly, the most popular TTRPG in Japan is actually Call of Cthulhu. It's pretty big in youtube plays and is especially popular with women compared to other games. D&D is popular too of course, but it's not the dominant game like it is in the west.
