OGB, how wrong you are - the 3/3.5 edition PHB lets wizards get feats giving the ability to wear progressively heavier types of armour, and Still Spell so that you can cast spells in full armour without penalty, IIRC I mean without spell failure chance - but you use higher level spell slots...
