    D&D General Monster harvesting mechanics?

Who has played around with letting players harvest resources defeated monsters? Things like killing a dragon and using their scales to make armor. Did you just do it as yea it's a part of the loot? Did you require skill checks? Have you ever had it be a core system to a campaign or a strong part...

Pathfinder 2E Kingmaker Adventure Path's Cover Art

Wait, they are making a 5ed version? I didn't hear about that. That is kind of exciting.

D&D 5E Are there actions not covered under a skill?

I am Ok with rolling with low stakes, or no stakes. Just make up the consequences. Like if you fail you check to find the silversmith, maybe you get lost and have to be guided back by a funny NPC. It doesn't change the result, but it gives flavor to the play.

D&D 5E Are there actions not covered under a skill?

This is more of a philosophical question than a direct question. Let's say a player wants to do something and there is no skill directly related to it, should you just go straight with it being just an ability check. or should you look for the closest skill and just use that. (Not the closest...

    D&D 5E Professions in 5e

Rules help define what matters in a game. If a game doesn't have a rule about chamber pots it's likely because they don't matter and most of the time they won't be included. It's weird because when you pop away from D&D you can find a lot of rules for a lot of weird things in other RPGs because...

    D&D 5E Professions in 5e

When it comes to overlap I would just not do anything extra. Just add proficiency if you have 1 or 10 that apply.

    D&D 5E Professions in 5e

I don't think it's so much about mimicking reality as much as it is about letting people make a wider range of characters. Profincites are way more important then many people think because outside of combat they are the main way players and characters express themselves. When you mark down a...

    D&D 5E Professions in 5e

If you're a soldier who knows how to solder, then you get proficiency in solder. In the 5ed playtest there were no skills everything was just proficiency I internalized this and never let it go even when the playtest ended and the game no longer worked like how I imagined it. I definitely think...

    Spelljammer Spelljammer in 5e

I always make a lot of tweaks mostly in requiring less magic to do things. Like ships don't need helms and can just use sails. One thing I kind of lean in on is the trippy gravity aspect of it, so you have villages on asteroid fields, double-sided buildings, and free-floating forests.

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

I think something most people would agree on is that reskinning something the players have is riskier then reskinning something the DM has. Simply because there are so many more chances for it to get weird.

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

I wasn't sure how much an example it was. It seemed like they were arguing both that they would make tweaks, but that they would also be justified with not making tweaks. I think there is disagreement in both what a reskin means, but also there seems to be a disagreement on if the fluff and the...

D&D 5E good vehicle chase rules?

Have them fight on the wagon.

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

I am thinking construct with all the resistance and immunities that implies. Higher than average hp and AC lower dex and speed. Maybe some kind of magic effect because of that if common with constructs. Ok and now you answer my question.

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

Then like are they still goblins, or did you just use goblins as a template then modify them to be more clockwork automaton? To back things up a bit @Saelorn pointed out all the ways goblins don't work like automation and basically said it would be unfair to fight a monster that didn't act as...

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

I was pondering something like acid damage because it would make sense for automation to be weak to it or less resistant to it, but it was just a hypothetical. Basically players aren't able to affect the world unless the world has some kind of logic to it. I actually doubt most DMs would do...

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

Goblins and automation are so far apart from them wise why even call them automation if they aren't going to act like automation? It's going to feel unfair like the players have lost their ability to direct how things play out. Like a player will see of we are fighting a clockwork automation and...

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

In the context of what I was talking about changing the abilities was removing the point. The idea was can you get away with using a wholly different stat block for a monster. That challenge or argument doesn't exist if you are not using the stat block. I worry this thread will end up in some...

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

If we start nixing or changing the abilities, I wouldn't call it a pure reskin.

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

It would be really hard to pull off. Dragons are iconic, so most players will know their different abilities. Also, the dragon doesn't have a lot of spider-powers like there is no weblike ability. Even the limbs don't add up. Like dragons have bite claw, tail, and wing attacks. You can get the...

D&D General Do people like re-skinning?

I think this is a good example of when I start to dislike a reskin. You eventually run into issues where the skin and the mechanics come into conflict and you have to try and wrangle more fluff justifications onto it. At this step, I think it might be better to change some of the mechanics...
