Worlds of Design: The Lost Art of Being Lost

Well, if all the players and the GM have had enough to drink........ The Melnibonean sorcerers employed a scout from the Weeping Wastes to take them through the Forest of Troos and into Ilmiora. He had one job and he got lost. Fearing the Melnibonean's wrath, he did not tell them he was lost...

    A Dragonlance Retrospective: Part 2

That's a shame. Several of my players have stated that DL 10 was the best D&D adventure ever written.

Worlds of Design: The Lost Art of Being Lost

In my M-Space campaign I realized that a misjump was mathematically inevitable. So I prepped a mini "Lost in Space" campaign for them with a way back home. Then just waited for the inevitable fumbled roll to happen. One of the scenarios in that campaign became Junkyard Blues, which got published...

The Comae Engine: An Interview with Clarence Redd

When people ask me what's my favorite rpg I tell them "M-Space" Why? Extended Conflict rules. IMHO that made all other rpgs obsolete.

Dragonlance Unlocked on D&D Beyond: Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen!

Define meaningful. If it advances the plot, it's a meaningful choice. Simply wandering about the sandbox, doing whatever the moment fancies them, is not making meaningful choices. That's why sandboxes are illusions. The moment the characters abandon the sandbox feature and make the choice to...

Dragonlance Dragonlance Adventure & Prelude Details Revealed

Doesn't work for the Spaniards though does it? They viewed it as evil. Which is my point. By assigning alignments, D&D is saying "A is right, B is wrong". If they did a New World module, would Spaniards be good, Aztecs evil? Should Columbus be LG or CE? How about Cortez? Alignments are very...

Review of Junkyard Blues for M-Space

Rereading this review, I note an error. The Darklight doesn't have a crew of 40. It has a crew of six. It takes 40 modules to create 8 crew quarters in the M-Space starship construction rules. That must have been the source of the misunderstanding. It didn't help that the six crew members, who...

Dragonlance Unlocked on D&D Beyond: Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen!

https://www.enworld.org/threads/review-of-junkyard-blues-for-m-space.684559/ I don't just play them, I write them and they get reviewed right here. Reviewed right here as an "excellent sandbox setting and adventure for M-Space." Note the "and adventure" part. What I wrote was an adventure. The...

Dragonlance Dragonlance Adventure & Prelude Details Revealed

The part that is inferred: do the right thing by (their) society. By this ill thought out definition, my Aztecan ancestors were LG paladins yanking the still beating hearts out of voluntary sacrifices to save the world.

Dragonlance Unlocked on D&D Beyond: Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen!

You're having a conversation with an award winning screenwriter and GMsplaining roleplaying and storytelling to a person who has GM'd for forty years I'm sorry your gaming experience is what you describe. It is not my own I've run the original DL campaign three times. None of them were the...

Dragonlance Dragonlance Adventure & Prelude Details Revealed

What we DO know is that magical healing was not known outside of possibly the evil clerics. And sinde the evil clerics weren't generally known that's pretty much all of Krynn. So, unless the Gods of Neutrality don't give healing, it's more logical to assume they stayed out of the conflict...

Dragonlance Dragonlance Adventure & Prelude Details Revealed

In Runequest, there are no alignments, who is evil depends on who you talk to and everyone games in Glorantha just fine. It wouldn't be a bad thing if D&D got rid of alignments.

Dragonlance Unlocked on D&D Beyond: Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen!

No difference at all. It's a form of story telling. That players choose instead of writers doesn't change the fundamental rules of story telling. The DM supplies the plot, the PCs make the choices that drive the plot. Nothing changes just because you now have a team of writers, each in control...

Dragonlance Unlocked on D&D Beyond: Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen!

It's vastly different. As an aside, a screenplay with no character choices is garbage. Plot drives character, character drives plot. That's basic storytelling 101.

Dragonlance Unlocked on D&D Beyond: Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen!

In fairness, it's a war story. Even in screenplays there are less character choices to be made in war stories. The characters are swept up in a war. That limits their options. War stories are more plot driven. (Imagine a WW2 rpg critic complaining "well, D-Day seemed a bit railroady"). A war...

Dragonlance Unlocked on D&D Beyond: Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen!

I like that they've blurred the actual start date. Being able to put it as much as 6 months before the gods return allows the GM to run a no clerics campaign and introduce the gods at whatever point they want to. I applaud their flexibility.

Well, it serves the purpose of saying "TSR gave players a sandbox to play in where there are no clerics." Going ahead and playing clerics in that sandbox seems silly and pointless
