D&D 5E What homebrew rules are you using for level advancement?

I have done several different methods, currently I have an adapted pathfinder AP where I am running milestone leveling with no issues. With the conversion and and focus on plot I find it works perfectly, the players level when it makes sense for the narrative. In my hexcrawling game I have XP...

D&D 5E Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

My short answer, make time constraints, increase average encounter difficulty and reduce number of encounters. 1/2 encounters per short rest, 2/3 short rest per long rest. If they want to long rest and we're not in a position where something is in danger they rest. In a game primarily driven by...

    D&D 5E Storied Weapons?

I looked at the 3.5 weapons of legacy book to get ideas for weapons with storied histories. Weapons that grant simple abilities but give the wielder a hint at how to unlock more power were fun for me to create. Depending on how you do the power unlocking they can cause entire quests by themselves.

D&D 5E +1 sword or Flame Tongue- or both?

I personally am a huge fan of reducing variance, so if I had to pick I would always pick a +2 sword. I was ecstatic because the flametongue is cool as hell, I wanted to use my sword that burst in to flames all the time. I would always choose a +2/+2 over a +1/+1 that claimed it was on fire. I...

D&D 5E +1 sword or Flame Tongue- or both?

I have never been dissapointed in the amount of damage my players do, I would be fully in favor of the flametongue. When I received one I was ecstatic, my player got one and he uses it constantly.

New Dragon+ (issue 12): The Inspiration Issue

The tomb preview is great. It has a sidebar about possible places to put it, including the 6 original ones Gygax suggested in Greyhawk. Hopefully those who disliked the other 4 books being set in FR can appreciate their attention to explicitly stating it can be anywhere the DM sets his campaign...

D&D 5E Eldritch Knight: How often do you actually use War Magic?

I use it most of the time. With lucky drops in a very difficult SKT campaign I am the proud owner of a flametongue longsword. I am very much focused on being unhittable, and thanks to the flame tongue and booming blade I even present a credible threat so giants can't simply walk past me. I have...

Are you a problem player and if yes why?

I try not to be pushy, but whenever we get in to harrowing combats I aggressively suggest lines of play for my allies. It's probably my biggest failing as a player. I will one day learn to bite my tongue, but it's hard to stay quiet when our lives are on the line. I do try to keep it brief and...

    D&D 5E Tankiest 5th-level PC

I am a fan of fighter 5 for EK and defense style. V-Human S: 15(9) D: 10(2) C: 15(9) I: 10 (2) W: 13 (5) Ch: 8(0) Racial go to con and wis, feat is heavy armor master bumping strength. Level 4 take warcaster so that you can cast shield and keep your weapon in your hand. Take defense style for...

    D&D 5E Ogremoch's Bane - Out of the Abyss

Just tell them this is what they need to do, but not the specific numbers. It doesn't need to be a secret. The tension comes from having to balance this ritual with attacking creatures.

    D&D 5E Ogremoch's Bane - Out of the Abyss

With that make up you could run a skill challenge of sorts. The party would have to perform a series of skill checks of varying difficulties to perform a ritual to try and cleanse the cloud. Something like inscribing a runic circle, trapping it inside it, then channeling energy to dispel it. If...

    D&D 5E 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

Doing that still doesn't prevent parties that strategize well from killing monsters in the MM with less resource loss than expected. If your goal is to challenge players making new and interesting monsters is a solid way to do it over removing fun toys they can use. Also as a DM I have never...

D&D 5E I want more Magic Items in my games...

No problem doing this at all, I have basically done a similar thing to this. In my Eberron campaign we have gotten to about 2 years and 4 months. They have gone from level 6 to level 27 and have great deals of magic items. As a DM you just have to consider these magic items when designing...

D&D 5E Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

I agree whole heartedly in my games. However if someone came to a game where they had very rigid expectations about the game world (Goblin groups come in a set range of sizes, Orcs and Gnolls will never get armor better than their listed MM armor) then the notion that the party could come across...

D&D 5E Why Good Players Do Not 14.25.

There seems to be a huge mismatch in desires and expectations. For me, when I play an adventure path style (Homebrew or pre-written) I expect and plan to make most of the encounters and adventuring days an appropriate challenge for the players. In the fiction of these worlds once they get to...

D&D 5E Have you experienced very high-level (18+) play in 5e? Tell me about it!

Back to my original post, the Epic levels I give are of my own creation. They give a unique ability tailored very specifically to each characters story//playstyle. They are pretty fun. Completely agree. I have not confirmed, but my experience has given me two rules of thumb for high level play...

D&D 5E Have you experienced very high-level (18+) play in 5e? Tell me about it!

Currently at level 27, 24 of those are normal class levels and 3 of them are mythic level equivalents, and I gave them the world in magic items. Ranger(Spell-less) 19 / Barbarian 5 / Mythic 3 Vorpal Blade, Weapon Of Legacy (Desert Wind), Belt of Fire Giant Strength, Byeshk Armor Plating (Acts...

Unearthed Arcana What's in YOUR Unearthed Arcana?

I am reasonably happy with the UA for what it is, a first draft of future ideals. The biggest draw for me is just seeing what ideas the current designers are messing around with. Often I'll gain inspiration from some singular ability and expand on that further for a homebrew thing. I do allow my...
