Judges Guild Makes Statement About Goodman Controversy [Updated]

So Judges Guild - whose statements on any other topic most people here would view pretty sceptically - said something that would let people get into a purity storm about Goodman Games, so a bunch of folks chose to unquestioningly presume that they were being truthful. Then it turns out yet...

D&D 5E Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

The revision/expansion of LMoP is a trash-tier set of additions that someone has thrown a match onto, starting a garbage fire.

D&D General What modules have you reused for multiple campaigns

I’d describe the mileu/setting as the Campaign World and then the individual campaigns run within that. My campaign world has been running since 85 (three years after I started playing) and two of my current players have each taken part in multiple campaigns within it. To answer the OP: LMoP...

Can’t believe you would say no as player-dm to your players what a linear railroad you run smh.

D&D 5E Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

Didn’t realise Wizards were quite so involved with TSR in 1982. 🤔 For me it would be Lost Mine of Phandelver. One of the best D&D adventures ever released - I’d say even better than T1 - and the only classic of the 5e period.

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

So you’re saying that in Soviet’s sandbox, player DMs you? I became convinced, several pages ago, that the whole playstyle is some internal construction that exists wholly in his head. The Supreme Court of Weekend TTRPG Justice that convenes each Sunday but has a light caseload does nothing but...

What Do YOU Want The Future of TTRPGs To Look Like?

I've heard you talk about these (and your "candles" metaphor) often on your podcast. I'm no anti-WotC zealot - I do DM a 5e campaign fortnightly (albeit I admit I'd prefer 2nd Edn in my dreamworld!) - but I think it's interesting that three of these are either partially or wholly involuntary on...

    The Good Sandbox Thread [+]

Thank you for all this detail! I hope your third group is more like the first than the second. My wife and I were in a kinda rpg of the month type group for a bit and while I understand why some folks enjoy the ludic, system-exploration novelty aspect of the hobby, we both prefer the prolonged...

    The Good Sandbox Thread [+]

You mentioned in another thread that you’d run Drinax twice before, and were on your third time through it. I’d be super-keen to hear how each had gone, what worked, what was more problematic about running it, what approaches the players took and so on.

    The Good Sandbox Thread [+]

The other campaign I currently run is a 5e one. I’d far rather it was 2e, but I compromised with the players by saying that I’d do 5e as they wanted (that lot are Pathfinder players but they wanted to try out the 5e) but with half the progression rate. We’ve been playing fortnightly without a...

    The Good Sandbox Thread [+]

I’m running Drinax right now for a party of mainly 5e-only players. I was worried they’d sit there and await the next instalment of the adventure path at each point (and that I’d burn through the adventures in the main book and Drinaxian Companion trying to kickstart them) but all but one of...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

“Contrafibularities? Why, ‘tis a common enough word down our way.” Even before you posted about watching 10-20 games in a day, I suspected that you were one of those people who watches a lot but doesn’t get to play. Your highly idiosyncratic view of what role playing games are like in practise...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

That’s Reynard’s whole point: you’re just repeating it back to him. He is saying precisely that the sandbox experience can be retold as a linear narrative, but that this is illusionary. Essentially, retelling the experience as a narrative is like Flatland, where the 2D inhabitants cannot...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

Every post you make seems to suggest that you think that sandbox games are necessarily hyper-collaborative and wholly reflexive, with what you refer to as a “player-dm” fully participating in a radically non-privileged way in the game, as the players shape the world by making assertions about it...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

It doesn’t have to be improv, of course. On discord after each session, I ask the players what they want to do in the next session, and I prep that (or, more often, those). Obviously, improv comes into every session, but it’s not the defining feature. Also I see that sealion bloke came across...

How Much Do You Care About Novelty?

The good thing about novel games offering a "fresh take" that revitalise the RPG experience with edgy and modernised approaches is how much they make me appreciate going back and playing the classics after a couple of sessions.

Marc Miller's copy of Traveller, original in shrink, sold for $5500

Marc was selling off various material, a decade or so ago. I have his original sketch for the Broadsword mercenary cruiser framed in my study and I’m unreasonably proud of it. Of course I’m not 100% sure how many of the original plans of the Broadsword he sold… 🤔
