Should a GM be a Captain or Navigator?

My answer is that you cannot be one or the other exclusively, or that there are times when you should not be one or the other at all. Most games that I have ran/DMed have needed some captaining and navigating to start out, but once the group has a working knowledge of the setting, they...

Should a GM be a Captain or Navigator?

He needs to be both and neither and one or the other. It depends on the group dynamics and the situation at hand. If the group is endlessly planning, then some Captain is needed to get the game moving. If the group is just starting out in a new world/campaign, then some navigator is needed to...

What would 2e have been if the designers implemented their desired changes?

I think it was extremely shortsighted of them. Keeping nonsense so that it is compatable with prior nonsense is nonsense. I dont think that there has been any time where the fan base would have been against making AC make sense.

Gaming Fans Absolutely Blow My Mind - A Rant

Considering that 'nerdrage' is its own term now, it isnt all that suprising that it only took two post for someone to make a stupid comment. Not that I disagree with Hussar. Especially when it is stupid nerdrage out in public. Especially since there is no way that anyone can know what the next...

    Hiring the PCs?

Do you have a problem with the PCs not answering a summons? In my game world, there is a tradition of adventuring, so the PCs are by no means unique. Also means that if the PCs havent done anything blatantly illegal, generally a lord who wants to give a job will just send a messenger down to...

The Ethics of )(*#$ing with the PCs' plans

I have given an int 12 paladin who extensively researched the known tactics of the bad guys they were about to attack a roll to see if he had an idea of the bad guys plans. One natural 20 later, he had a pretty good idea on what the bad guys were going to do. Likewise, I gave a blackguard who...

The Escapist on D&D Past, Present, and Future

How is playing an MMO for several hours at a time a short attention span? Am I just getting old to think that 3-4 hours of gaming is plenty? Attention span is not the issue, it is pacing and the non-roleplay aspects of PnP games that is the issue, if it is an issue at all. By pacing I mean that...

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

I think it is alot more complicated that you think. As a DM I can 'frak with that' completely inside 'the interaction of the dice, the rules, and the player choices'. You seem to miss that you cannot win D&D, so you cannot rig the game to be won. If you think that letting a friend sit around...

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

Pretty much everyone has said they would let him die. Also, they would make the informed decisions the same way they do in real life, namely without any information. I also doubt that any DM who would let the BBEG live would care if he killed off all the players.

Do you want/are you ready for a D&D 5th edition?

I think it is past time for an editioning, if only to return the Players Handbook to being the handbook for players. I think that the ruleset has gotten way to confused, with Essentials semi-obsoleting the pre-Essentials stuff, and DDI changing quite a few of the rules that dont appear in a book.

My DM just told me he fudges rolls....

Yes, I would award more XP if I let the BBEG live, but I would not let him live. If the players outthought me, I dont penalize them for it. If I deliberately throw the fight for no reason, they dont get the xp. If I change the monster tactics so that I dont accidently kill off the party, I will...

    Your favourite botches

My first one dosent really count as a botch, but the first time I played WEG d6 Star Wars, we ended up getting chased off a planet by a Sith. When we take off on one players ship, I get the wise idea to get in the belly gun and let the Sith have it with the ship-scale laser cannons. Needless to...

    "Let's rest now"

Better watch it, you may end up with an entire legion as camp followers. Well, more camp guardians, but they were good at setting up that sort of thing. :D

    "Let's rest now"

Who said I dont have the time? All I said is I dont play often enough. I prefer to play the game when playing the game, as opposed to making new characters for stupid reasons. I am pretty sure that sometime in the last 30 years (yes I have been playing D&D for that long) I figured out that I...

    "Let's rest now"

I personally dont find wasting one of my too few gaming sessions making a new character because of a stupid or uninformed decision to be all that enjoyable. I certainly dont find tossing out multiple adventures because my players made a stupid or uninformed decision to be all that enjoyable...

A More specific - how would you respond to this request?

I am with you here. The DM is there to make a decision and move on. Debating the point is not a good thing. You lose me here tho. The group I play with are friends I have had for a couple decades. They trust me with their kids, and that trust is reciprocated. I would still have asked for a...

    "Let's rest now"

I dont think this was a 'Let's Rest' moment so much as a 'We didnt plan our op' moment. I am like Dannyalcatraz, I plan the extraction before and during the operation. On a good op, that means that once you get the mcguffin, it should only be a matter of running fast enough to get to safety. It...
