    Observations about Chainmail/OD&D. . .

Highlighted the parts of your great post that reflect where I've been in my gaming for about three years now--both to comment that you're not alone, and I think you've summed up a lot of how I feel about the matter really, really well. It ain't for everybody (or there wouldn't've been an...

    2e Random Encounter Tables?

As noted, the original loose-leaf Monstrous Compendiums (MC 1/2) had the charts, and they were later reprinted in the Monstrous Compendium Annual Appendix Vol. 2

Necromancer Games shutting down next year.(UPDATE post 93)

I agree. I don't run d20 games, and I enthusiastically buy NG products because the material's worth doing the backwards conversion. Man, what a bummer.

    Archetypes, are they useful anymore?

Interestingly enough, the Thief, as he appeared in Supplement I, had no skill relating to finding traps. He could remove any traps he did come across (though only small ones, such as poison needles), but a skill relating to finding traps was not part of the Thief as originally presented...

    Planar adventuring

I've thoroughly devolved back to EGG's article Planes: The Concepts of Spatial, Temporal and Physical Relationships in D&D, adding inspired or complementary details from Supplements III and IV, and touches of things that I like from other sources (devils, from the OAD&D MM, some of the themes...

[EDITION WARZ] Selling Out D&D's Soul?

This post mirrors my experiences in O/OA D&D pretty much exactly over the last 24 years. As always, others MMV, but in this instance, at least, Ourph and I are on the same page. My Players are generally disgruntled when ambushed or Surprised by non-treasure type monsters, will go out of their...

    Back to the future

Always nice to read about some other group giving the classic rules a go. I launched a new pick-up game using them in Dec 2004, and atm it's the only campaign we're still playing. Lots of fun; hope yours will be too.

    What do you usually play?

At present, nothing, due to a re-location, tho that's looking like it might change in the next few weeks. My last two games were Classic D&D (diaglo's version) and d20 Everquest.

    Life-changing steps ...

Courage is not the absence of fear, its the willingness to stand to despite your fear, and it looks like you've got tons of it--which puts you well on your way. Fortune favours the daring, and by the sounds of your post you've got the right attitude, and I've no doubt you'll do just fine...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

I did something similar, except that they were Teleported directly to Yuggoth, where, in addition to the mi-go and Nyarlathotep, they could encounter the Walls of Eryx (and fight lizard men with various staves) and go beneath the planet's surface, too (a la Richard Lupoff's HPL homage Discovery...

Rate S3 - Expedition to the Barrier Peaks

I rated it an 7, and my complaints (and positive remarks) are basically identical to yours. I really liked the weird new monsters, though, and have used them outside the module on many occasions.

And your favorite module writer is?

Favourite module of all time? G3, Hall of the Fire Giant King. Favourite module writer of all time? E. Gary Gygax.

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Not to step on the good Colonel's toes, but IOUN stones in D&D first appeared in issue #4 of The Strategic Review, in an article bearing Mr Vance's stamp. Just thought I'd share...

    Archfiend-based adventures

Paladin In Hell features Geryon and Amon directly in the action, as well as a involving Demogorgon, Asmodeus, and a smattering of other infernal personages peripherally.

What games or game systems do you miss playing?

Huge, huge DCH fan here. Always looking for an excuse to run games, even as one-shots, and always missing it when I'm not immersed in it.
