I'd say that about covers it for me, too. I put more effort into things that are really important, but often I'll just put down a couple sheets of paper rather than even bothering to go to the effort of drawing and erasing.

I'm not privy to the minds of the designers, mind you, but it seems to me that their intent is that you are harder to hit if you are providing some kind of threat to the person who is attacking you. By the reasoning above, using Total Defense when you have Combat Expertise will not be useful...

Hmm... and here I just figured it was ENWorld's version of The Time of Troubles. Suppose not, though; Crothian, Diaglo, Rel, etc. seem to have made it through alive. ;)

If the DM "suggests" or requires players to have backup characters, then I'll do it. In games that seem like they are going to have a high PC mortality rate, I tend to kick ideas around in my head so that I have a concept I can use to start a new character as soon as it is necessary...
