D&D Releases Playtest for Updated Artificer

Eberron doesn't need a physical book update. But a digital game-options book? I'd drop $19.99 on a digital-only book with Eberron races, Dragonmarks, and the Artificer. Or even $29.99 if they add even more options. Also, a Forgotten Realms Player Book next fall is perfect for the missing Cleric...

D&D General [Humor] Things You Hate About 7E

So, when I signed up for the 7E "Living Multiverse" program, where we physically get to Astrally project our consciousness to Sigil and every other campaign setting, I was hoping for some Humblewood action! But due to queue times, I kept getting sent to Ravenloft, which is NOT FUN. I can't...

D&D General [Humor] Things You Hate About 7E

The 3D neural interface environment for the Neural Tabletop (NTT) is pretty, sure, but I don't like how every class acquires their spells, maneuvers, and magic items through random loot boxes. We want to play a L20 one-shot first against the Petulant Tantrum Tarrasque, then the Muscle Mommy...

    D&D (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

The changing of official lore means next to nothing for any campaign. If there is a lore change that a gaming group doesn't like, they already have their established lore that they can and should stick with. Your campaign history is what you want it to be. It does not affect any table outside of...

    D&D (2024) 3 Months in - Weapon Mastery

Nah. I like that it is as limited as it is (which isn't a lot, to be honest). Those classes already have so many toys. Let them take the Feat if they want Weapon Mastery.

D&D General A Quick Peek At Tiamat In Amazon's 'Secret Level' Anthology TV Show

It's live! And it is so cool. Lots packed into the short story!

D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

I'm right there with you. I don't really want to dedicate years to master another system, so I only play other systems as one-shots or mini-campaigns, like Monster of the Week. 5E does what I need to play games my group wants to play. And now it has 10 years of feedback being used to tidy it up...

    D&D 5E Damage Spell Scaling

1st and 2nd level damage spells have their purpose in both early levels, and as prepared up-castable options at higher levels. And it is ok for a spellcaster to swap out their preferred loadout as they gain experience, if they don't value those spells at later levels. They can free up their...

    D&D 5E Damage Spell Scaling

We're only talking opinions here, but the Wizard and other spellcasters aren't broken. Other than cantrips that scale for basic offensive actions, for levelled spells, it is the spell-slot that reflects increases of power, not the original spell level Low level spells should not get better for...

D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

I'm not your target demographic, but I have tangential experience. I played every edition all the way through, through the transition into each next edition. I looked forward to every change, because I felt the pain points of the late-stage of each of those editions, and was happy to try...

D&D 5E The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

Yeah, I agree. A character will almost always have a primary weapon that is better than their secondary weapons, due to primary ability score differences, feat/weapon mastery investment, or magic properties. That does not invalidate the secondary weapons used for their secondary purpose.

D&D 5E The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

Some people want their ally ranger to be long range. Maybe you're one of them. Some people demand their ally clerics/bards/druids be healbots. What does their opinion have to do with what the player of the character wants to play? If they want a long range ace, they can play one.

D&D (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

What is the fantasy trying to be fulfilled? A thug? Someone that roughs up other people to intimidate and steal from them, but is still good at being a rogue? (treating all simple melee weapons as finesse weapons opens up clubs and staves and other "thug"-themed weapon options, some sort of...

D&D (2024) No more Cleric and Sorc dips!

I like that the Feats pull some of the weight for "dipping" into other class abilities, like Magic Initiate. Also, at higher levels, the "Enspelled" magic items can help support a specific build that wants access to a specific spell, like "Enspelled Plate Armor of Shield". I allow expanded...

D&D (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

I'm not saying that you can't have fun with this homebrew if you make it for yourself or a player who really doesn't mind sucking at Dex-based Rogue abilities, or if you roll ability scores and have both a high Strength and Dexterity score. I'm saying that for public consumption, the design...

D&D (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

But they don't have to put points in Strength. They can do all the good stuff with a rapier and light armor.

D&D (2024) No more Cleric and Sorc dips!

For the first time in running D&D 5E, none of my players have a multiclass character by Level 4. That is remarkable because I have 3 players who almost always play multiclass characters. The 2014 Rules made so many 1-level dips too tasty to pass up. Now they are valuing getting those higher...

D&D (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

A Rogue subclass does not needs to be compared to full spellcasters or Wish. It needs to be compared to other Rogue subclasses. And it blows all the other Rogue subclasses out of the water for both DPS and survivability.

D&D (2024) Rogue, Thug. Homebrew subclass

Thinking further, I don't think rogue-style thugs (as opposed to fighter thugs) should have proficiency in shields. This fits no rogue fantasy I'm aware of. They need weapons or free hands to shake people down. Adding shields is merely a mechanical way to significantly increase their defense...
