D&D 5E The Wonkiness of Tool Proficiency

I don't find Tool Proficiencies confusing on their own. (You're either proficient or not. That's pretty straightforward.) The only issue I have is with the Skill/Tool overlaps, like Musical Instrument and Perform.

D&D 5E Interesting (if you like geeky analysis) little anomalies in the 5e NPC statblocks

Is it possible this is another case of a simplified feat snuck in? (In this case, the one that grants the extra 1st level spell?)

D&D 5E A NEW interview with Mike Mearls

Adventures (sorry, I mean "Storylines") without setting resources still seems like a weird move to me. Its one thing for an introductory adventure, but if you want people playing in the Forgotten Realms for years, it seems like you'd want to get that out by Q2 2015. I'm also wandering if this...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana probably coming to D&D website (Reddit AMA)

So it sounds like a couple of Adventure Paths a year, each with its own Player's Guide with new options -- and possibly with a rule about only using content from one such book at a time. (That sounds an awful lot like M:TG's deck construction rules.)

    D&D 5E Dungeonscape no more?

And I stopped buying 4e content when they dropped support for PDFs. I broke down and have been buying the core books in 5e, because that's the game I run with my players, but I would *muuuuuch* prefer to buy PDFs and the lack of PDFs will definitely be a disinsentive to purchasing additional...

D&D 5E Character play vs Player play

The DC Heroes game from the 1980s had rules for spending hero points for a convenient stacking crate. D&D supplements from the 90s certainly talked about options to have players portray NPCs in certain scenes. These are not new concepts in the 2000s, but have evolved organically out of more...

D&D 5E Character play vs Player play

You're missing the point. One extreme is to say "I don't care what skills you have or what your ability scores are. You have to figure out everything on your own." The other is "Every single decision can be determined with a die roll." I think most/all of us come down somewhere in the middle...

    D&D 5E Orc or Half-Orc?

I think we can all agree that the game started fairly basic and became more complex over time. But picking apart the first role-playing game for not being innovative enough seems misguided to me.

    D&D 5E Orc or Half-Orc?

WotC has been very clear about their goals with this edition, which include better serving fans of previous editions and encouraging them to sample and convert. They deliberately chose to include all of the class/race combos from previous PHBs in order to appeal to the BROADEST possible...

D&D 5E Can you see when you're Blinded?

Oxford commas only appear in lists of three or more items (e.g. A, B, or C rather than A, B or C). They are are a stylistic choice and have no impact on meaning. They certainly wouldn't negate part of an and-clause. So: 1) they are wrong that the sentence COULD have an Oxford comma 2) even if...

    D&D 5E Orc or Half-Orc?

I think WotC did the right thing in including the standard Half-Orc in the PHB. There are a lot of people who like and play that race, so not including them because some folks on a message board have some different ideas would be a mistake. That said, I've certainly handled Half-Orcs a number...

    D&D 5E Please Support Eberron!

I never ran an adventure in Eberron, but most of my late 3e era campaigns used Warforged, Shifters, and Changelings as core races. Eberron is good stuff.

D&D 5E fifth edition release schedule ... cart before the horse?

HOARD to TIAMAT is a full AP. It's just in larger hardcovers rather than shorter paperbacks. I'm not aware of anyone who's bought HOARD that's complained that it won't last them until TIAMAT is out. I'm not aware of any edition that has offered a "variety" of modules in its first few months of...

D&D 5E fifth edition release schedule ... cart before the horse?

Your point seems to be "if I discount some of the material WotC has released, they have not released enough material." I don't understand this argument at all. There are folks who are playing through both MINES and HOARD. The next book will be out before folks are finished with HOARD. This...

D&D 5E Newbies reading the MM and DMG?

Folks can buy whatever they want. A player it one game may be a DM in another. You shouldn't run your D&D game assuming that everything in the MM and DMG will be a surprise to your players.

D&D 5E I'd like to know the thinking behind this....

Because Tiefling was an out-of-the-box option in 4e, and a lot of people played Tieflings. With the new edition, they wanted to support that race out-of-the-box again. Aasimar are a more obscure race, because of how they were placed in earlier editions, and don't have the same sized fan base...

D&D 5E If you're planning to run 5e, have you started a homebrew campaign?

My D&D playtest ran about 20 sessions, and we'll be rolling it over into a 5e game starting tomorrow! (With new characters. The playtest characters are all deities now.)

D&D 5E What armor can druids wear? Is there a way to get a decent AC?

I saw the earlier conversation. I didn't see a justification for the -1 claim.

D&D 5E What armor can druids wear? Is there a way to get a decent AC?

Ah, I think I see part of the mistake you're making: Are you assuming that AC remains static over the course of the spell? That if your AC is less than 16 when the spell is cast, that it's "trapped" at 16 for the duration of the spell? That is not what the spell states. All it says that, for...
