Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

The sources give a weight of around 1,000 pounds. The standard tortle is 500 pounds though. Regards Mortis

In that case do you want to convert the tortle after the snapper? Regards Mortis

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

I'm not particularly in favour of a LA +0 snapper. I think the reason that the tortle in Dragon 315 was given that treatment was that it was a standard playable race for that region of Mystara. Regards Mortis P.S. Lets hope that there is never an offical 4E version of the tortle - given that...

    Converting Epic Level Creatures

Thinking about the draeden's 'Swallow Whole' ability. Does a victim travel X feet towards the central body per round? If so would it need to cut its way out in single round or have to start again. It could of course make a fresh grapple check to remain in place and enlarge the hole it has...

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

They are certainly more brutish but not really that much tougher. To sum it up from the above link. They have one more Hit Dice than a standard tortle. Their AC is two worst (and they cannot retreat into their shell). They have three attacks rather than a standard tortle's two (although it is...

    Converting Epic Level Creatures

Just need to stick my oar in regarding organisation. Whilst I agree that a whole draeden has a solitary organisation the 'tendrils' could show up in a group of upto 20 strong (to represent one side of the entire creature and the maximum that can attack one target). Regards Mortis

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

Checking Echohawk's list we have the following: Wallaran Spirits (Kangaroo, Koala, and Kookaburra) which are spirit guides/totems for the wallaras. And Tortle, Snapper - a humanoid tortoise. Regards Mortis

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

That all looks fine to me. I guess we should as Handle Animal won't cover them. Seems reasonable. Regards Mortis

Converting "generic setting" Second Edition monsters

Looking at these statements, I'm inclined to suggest an individual/group ability similar to a combination of the flyby attack and improved bull rush feats. Regards Mortis

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

Of Run and Endurance, I also prefer the former. Reckless Offence for the Camarilla is also fine. Regards Mortis

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

I've also got no problem with giving the larger cousin a couple of points of Str more. Looks like I'm on the losing side - but if they show up in my campaign they're going to be magical beasts! (Although I can see the dragonkin argument - 6 limbs, breath fire etc.) Regards Mortis

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

I assume you're asking about the second suggestion/query, but I'll answer for both. a. because they always make their save. b. because it's something the original didn't have and I don't see why the conversion should have it (other than it is a feature of the dragon type). I do expect to lose...

    Converting Epic Level Creatures

Regarding skills, I was also going to ask were a draeden could hide. I then came up with the answer myself - behind planets! :D Regards Mortis

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

As well as the fire resistance 15, should we also give them a bonus to their reflex saves against fire? I know that as a dragon type they get immunity to sleep and paralysis, but I would be quite happy giving them a special ability (penalty) that negates that immunity. Thoughts? Regards Mortis

So, after all that, yes to upping the Strength or Carrying Capacity. Regards Mortis

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

Ah, but doesn't a six-legged mount have a better carrying capacity than a quadruped? Or am I making that up? <goes off and looks> ... <returns> Well it doesn't appear to be in the SRD, maybe Savage Species (or even a previous conversion?). If nothing turns up, we could always come up with our...

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

I've no problem with making them dragon type - it does however give them better hit dice, saves (well Will), and skills. I've also no problem with reducing Dex and upping Natural Armour. I just tend to think of lizards as being quicker than mammals (then again most are only a few inches long)...

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

A few initial thoughts... Given it's breath weapon, Intelligence, and 6 legs a xytar is obviously a magical beast rather than a animal. The two sets of stats are very similar except for the breath weapon damage - 3d6 (3-18) for BECMI and 10d4 (10-40) for 2E. I suggest a compromise of 4d6 or...

Converting original D&D and Mystara monsters

Never mind, here's one I prepared earlier. I should have been a boy scout or (for our UK members) a Blue Peter presenter. Regards Mortis Xytar Armour Class: 3 Hit Dice: 5+1* Move: 120' (40') Attacks: 1 bite or 1 breath Damage: 1-10 or 3-18 No. Appearing: 1-6 (1-12) Save As: Fighter:2 Morale...
