    Hold Person

And even the ones who can teleport can only do that, what, 3 or 5 squares? That doesn't take you out of harm's way. That just ensures the rogue and his friends will have to stroll over a little further to stab you in the face. The way I see it, immobilized and stunned are the equivalent of the...

    Flaming Sphere Sustain Question

D'oh, now I feel really stupid. I'll check the rules properly next time, yeah.

    Flaming Sphere Sustain Question

Thanks! However, if they went to the trouble of writing "you can sustain it until the end of the encounter" in order to prevent abuse by having the sphere stick around a whole day, does this mean that other sustainable powers are in fact allowed to do just this? I mean, could a player sustain...

    Flaming Sphere Sustain Question

So, the Flaming Sphere entry says "Sustain Minor: You can sustain this power until the end of the encounter". Does this mean that by using one minor action, the sphere sticks around until the end of the encounter? Or that the wizard continually has to spend minor actions each round for it to...

    New Paladin Mark: Sacred Ward

I really like this idea, I think I'm gonna have to snatch it for my game. I like how it's an immediate reaction, as the radiant damage could quickly get out of hand otherwise. Stalker came up with something that I've felt was always missing, somehow.

    Giant Praying Mantis

The signature ability of preying mantises is that they grab the prey, then bite their heads off. I'd build it around the cave bear entry. Two claws, if both hit then the target is grabbed. Against a grabbed target, it can make a bite attack (i.e. on the next round). This also makes the fight...

D&D 4E How to build encounters in 4e (aka Only you can prevent Grindspace!)

Hehe, I'm guilty of doing that, too. If my players try to flee the scene, I'll draw the necessary terrain, but otherwise I hardly ever bother.

    Warlord - punished for sacraficing

    I count 4 Fighter powers (non-paragon path, mind), vs. the Warlord's 5.

D&D 4E How to build encounters in 4e (aka Only you can prevent Grindspace!)

Sure, that's a good tactic. I can't see why they would leave their fire support behind however, if they're an organised and intelligent force. As the enemy usually has more ranged firepower than the party, I'm thinking I should actually just have them stand back and let the party come to them.

Which concepts in 4E do you like?

That's pretty much a given though, isn't it? I mean, it's a polarising change and I can understand why 3E fans wouldn't like it. As a 4E fan myself, I'm glad they went along with it. For better or worse, it would just be a more polished, refined 3rd edition without it.

What's better: Rain of Blows, or Hesitation Slash?

I didn't explain myself very well there. What I meant was that RoB is strictly superior to other 3rd level encounter powers, other 7th level encounter powers, and pretty much par for the course when compared to 13th level encounter powers. I know you can't take it more than once, but even if it...

What's better: Rain of Blows, or Hesitation Slash?

For what it's worth, I agree with your DM about his ruling on Rain of Blows. I don't care what's proper formatting and indented lines. If RoB allows 4 attacks with the right weapon, I'd like to be convinced how that isn't taking all the choice of picking a 3rd, 7th and 13th level encounter...

D&D 4E How to build encounters in 4e (aka Only you can prevent Grindspace!)

Usually, the only characters with capable ranged weapons in a party is the wizard, and he's also the one who's best equipped to deal with minions. So if there's artillery in the back of the room pounding the party, that wizard is being forced to decide between clearing out all the little guys...

No other Ranged Weapon Class, or How I loathe the ranger

Thanks for replying, I hadn't heard that podcast. If that is indeed the case, I have trouble understanding why WotC can't figure out that everyone else plays the game differently that they do. But back to the ranger. I too have a ranger player (melee build), and I haven't seen him use anything...

No other Ranged Weapon Class, or How I loathe the ranger

Agreed. As much as I like 4th edition, this problem is really getting to me as well. It doesn't help that WotC pretends they're completely oblivious to the issue. They seem to have a policy about not admitting any fault in the at-wills at all. They fixed the rules loophole with Cleave, but...

Great ideas you did (or wished you had done) for your first game?

If they've at least heard of 4th edition, chances are pretty good that they know what a minion is and does. I have a hard time understanding DMs who hide which monsters are minions and which ones are not. In my mind, that's totally missing the point of using minions by like, a mile or something.

Great ideas you did (or wished you had done) for your first game?

For conditions, status effects, marks etc., I use both colored pipe cleaners twisted into little rings that you can hang on minis, as well as colored Warhammer bases to put under the minis. Between these two aids, it's really easy to just hang a "bloodied" or "quarry" pipe cleaner on a mini, or...

    [4E; Any Edition] Light Sources?

Thanks for the suggestions, all! I particularily like this one, and am considering using it (at least in some rooms). EDIT: Forgot to mention that the dungeon will be filled to the brim with darkvision-using undead (primarily lots of melee ones), and the only one in the party that uses ranged...

    [4E; Any Edition] Light Sources?

I think we misunderstood each other then. What I meant was that the wizard could just move the light source/spell every round, ensuring plenty of light between that and the torch. Also, don't forget that the wizard can target a square with light, it doesn't have to be a held item. That's why I'm...

    [4E; Any Edition] Light Sources?

Thanks for replying. I've banned sunrods in my campaign, conveniently solving that problem. What I meant with the bit about torches and the light spell is that between these two light sources, you could theoretically have 202 squares of the map lighted up. Of course, that's rarely the case as...
