Which spells do you usually imagine linked to an orb, staff or wand? (Tome optional)

None of them. I've already got my first house rule for 4e: wizards can choose one focus (orb, rod, staff, wand, dagger), and that focus will work with every spell the wizard learns AND "grow with the character", thus eliminating the "golf bag o' spell foci" that this rule threatens to become...

    Transporting Orbs

Especially since Wizards will also carry a staff... and we all know that a wizard's staff has a knob on the end. :)

    Best single volume RPG?

Let's see... Star Wars Saga Edition RPG. Star Wars RPG Second Edition (West End Games). Paranoia XP (I am cleared, thank you friend Computer!). D&D Rules Cyclopedia (1991). Shadowrun 3rd edition (mostly because I haven't gotten around to looking at 4th yet so I dont' know if that'll be better...

    Best single volume RPG?

Citizen, there has only been one edition of Paranoia XP. Any rumors you may have heard of other inferior editions are clearly false. Further, actual possession of these rumored and non-existant editions is treason at any clearance except ULTRAVIOLET. Your use of Sienna, a shade of yellow, is...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

IIRC, the intro to Expedition does say that this is only one module of the spacecraft in question... who knows where others might have landed? Perhaps one crash landed, with robots and crew more or less intact, in the mysterious realms bordering the Black Ice, and another, larger segment with...

    Overuse of monsters and magic.

Yes, I have noticed this. It's something that the designers of 3e didn't "get" when they decided to balance the game around the concept of adventurers having the "appropriate wealth" for their level. It's something that Living Greyhawk stumbled over for a while, literally allowing anyone to...

SAGA: Help me convert this character

Actually, his stats won't remain the same, since he has two *additional* stat points from 4th and 8th level. You can probably spend both of them to increase your charisma, but you cannot spend both of them to improve one stat that you have already improved through the level bump. i.e. if you've...

systems with Armor as DR: thoughts on Defense penalty?

Actually, it was the increasing use of crossbows that started the decline of full-plate armor, IIRC; reliable firearms came in later and in any case were far more expensive at the time than a good crossbow. Breastplates that could stand up to a musket shot were still in use for a fairly long time.

systems with Armor as DR: thoughts on Defense penalty?

Why not have armor give both a Defense boost and DR, but have the Defense boost overridden by the class bonus to armor? This allows the use of heavy armor at lower levels, but makes it increasingly unattractive as your PCs hit higher levels. That makes it so that the heavy-armor wearing guys...

    D&D 4E Poll: 4E god stats

I don't mind one way or the other about the current rules for deities... what I want in the Core Rules instead of "Here's some gods you can worship", is advice on building a pantheon and the individual deities therein.

How many wizards does it take to screw in a lightbu- I mean, kill Elminster?

Remember, the current Mystra isn't the same Mystra that Elminster... had a deep relationship with.

How many wizards does it take to screw in a lightbu- I mean, kill Elminster?

Spellchee... I mean, Spellfire does work in a dead magic/anti-magic zone. In fact, one of its uses is to "clean up" dead magic zones by pi... spraying it with Spellfire.

D&D 4E FR 4E SPOILER - Grand Histoy of the Realms info

It would be nice if Ilmater reverted to her roots as the Finnish goddess of motherhood instead of being the Faerunian god of masochism.

At what point are you no longer playing AD&D?

What I see happening is that the further D&D gets away from its tactical wargaming roots, the further it gets from being D&D. The "resource management" game is important to D&D, it is part of its core identity. The more resources you give the player characters in the rules, the further it gets...

D&D 4E FR 4E SPOILER - Grand Histoy of the Realms info

I'm torn between laughing and throwing up. The thing is, it's absolutely typical of the Realms. Soap Opera Plot Of The Week meets Cutthroat Corporate Board Meeting meets I dunno, how should we explain the way the rules change when we move from edition to edition? It's like they're a bunch of...

D&D 4E So who is going to measure distances in 4E rather than use the grid?

The grid is a convenience that makes things faster to draw on the battlemat and quicker for movement. I'd have no problem getting rid of the grid and just going to the freeform movement typical in wargames, but it would drastically increase my prep time and the amount of money I spend on...

How many wizards does it take to screw in a lightbu- I mean, kill Elminster?

It only takes one... provided that the one wizard in question is Elminster himself, and he decides to suicide. Otherwise, forget it.

    What the heck is "Unfun"?

A lot of the things listed as "unfun" might be annoyances and obstacles to the player, but that's exactly the point; the challenge is in managing those annoyances and turning them into what you do want. Like the halfling who can't wield the ogre's greatsword... it'll take time, but he should be...

    They Changed FIREBALL?

Bouncing lightning bolts were really fun, especially in a dungeon whose walls were less than a foot thick. Nothing like triggering multiple encounters at once. :)

    They Changed FIREBALL?

Nonsense, my characters cast Fireball indoors frequently... ...when there were a lot of open doors, and at least one long corridor, anyway. It's 33 10x10 cubes, so some of the larger rooms absorbed a lot of the foom! effect. Perfect for clearing out the corridors of some of the more complex...
