It was a fun experiment. I'm fired up for 4E!

    3 on 3 battle results...

Just ran a one-man battle w/ 3 characters (ranger, fighter, wizard) v.s. 3 kobolds (skirmisher, dragon shield, slinger) for s***s and giggles. Keep in mind, there wasn’t a whole lot in the way of tactics/terrain. I just did what I thought each character might do in each situation. And it...

Encounter question from an aspiring DM...

Thanks for the info so far folks. Okay, what about outdoor environments? "As you walk north, you see what appears to be a small party of 3 or 4 humanoids about 300 yards ahead. What do you do?" Does that sound about how you would explain the very beginnings of an outdoor encounter? If so...

Encounter question from an aspiring DM...

So the marching order also determines who falls in the pit trap in the hallway, I guess. Is there anytime when you need to use the grid for things like traps?

Encounter question from an aspiring DM...

Thanks for the reply. What about this part?: “The DM decides where the combatants start out on the battle grid. The DM shows the characters where they can set up their characters and then places the monsters.” Is there a general rule for where the combatants start? Is that just something...

Encounter question from an aspiring DM...

After reading the rules appendix handout, character sheets, and monster stats that have all been posted recently, I'm starting to REALLY get amped for 4E. But I need some help. This is a serious post although I'm sure many of you are going to find it very amateurish. But for those who want to...

    D&D 4E 4E Liker - anything you worry about?

QFT The battlegrid is easily what worries me most about 4E. A lot of why I skipped 3E was because I thought it was a little too mini-centered. Now 4E seems to be taking it a step further, which is a shame, because I like a lot of what it seems to offer. Even Massawyrm's 4E review on...

Anyone else coming back into the fold because of 4.0?

Haven't played since 1E/Early 2E. Just couldn't get into 3E, though I wanted to like it. 4E has me wanting to, and thinking I will like it! Preordered a bunch of stuff already. It's hard not to get pumped up about this edition after reading the review on aintitcool. I know some people have...

    Trend in the Art?

I kinda agree. Especially the 1st 3 adventures - one large character displayed up close in the front on each. I'd rather see some sort of scene, with a few characters and something prominent in the background...

    A Question of Character...

I completely agree that no one is being made to switch, but I get the feeling that deep down, everyone wants to switch - everyone wants to like the game. Someone brought up videogames earlier, so I'll try to use that as a crappy analogy. I haven't purchased a Playstation 3 yet, because...

    A Question of Character...

Yeah, I'm seeing that now. I just think it would be worth it (again this is me - one man's opinion) to lose a few options for a character or two, if those losses went a long way toward making the game more balanced for all. It just seems like a trade worth making. But I'm starting to realize...

    A Question of Character...

I don't know the answer for sure - I actually did not play 3E, though I did own the PHB at one time. But from what I can gather, it seems like we need 4E because the math behind the system/the system itself wasn't all that great. And this new system will make the game better.

No. Actually I don't know anything about Robin Law or his writings. I'll look it up. Thanks.

    A Question of Character...

Point taken about what makes the game fun for you. I guess that's the type of response I was trying to learn more about. But I wasn't assuming everyone enjoys the game the same way I do. In fact, in my opening statement, I pretty much said as much. Then I went on to say what I did like...

    A Question of Character...

Wow. Your language is way over my head. Really don't know what you're talking about in that second paragraph. Anyway, if you read my very first line, I mention that "I’m a little surprised at how many players seem to be very “character-focused”. That's just an observation on my part. The...

    A Question of Character...

QFT I guess I'm planning on going into PHB saying "Let's see, what looks like it would be a fun character to play?" Others are apparently going into the PHB saying "This is what I want to be able to do. They better let me." And that's fine. I just have a feeling I'm gonna have a lot...

    A Question of Character...

Fair enough. I get what you're saying, I just can't imagine being that particular about a character. I feel like most stories can still be told in pretty much the same way whether or not a character has a certain ability or not. No it won't be the exact same story, but you could make it...

    A Question of Character...

I’m a little surprised at how many players seem to be very “character-focused” when it comes to playing D&D. I know it’s an ROLE PLAYING GAME - just hear me out. First of all, assuming there are 8 core classes, and a couple/few “builds” of each, which if the Rogue preview is any indication...
