    Dragon Reflections #40

Jon Mattson here. Thanks for the kind words! I'm continually amazed and flattered that anyone is still interested in the stuff we did, way back when. That was, quite literally, a lifetime ago. BTW, Awful Green Things was awesome. I still have it, although it is literally falling apart. For...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #14: Warlock

Ooops! I just noticed another minor goof. Wish I'd noticed this just a few minutes sooner, before you re-uploaded. "At 2nd level, you gain an eldritch invocation of your choice." Actually, you don't. The 2nd level choice is an "Any". An "Eldritch" specific choice doesn't show up until later...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #14: Warlock

Minor goof: There is no indication, on the chart, as to spell level access. I assume it's as per most full spellcasting classes. Aside from that obvious problem... To be honest, I'm feeling kind of on the fence about this one. I mean, it's not bad, but I didn't see anything that really excites...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #4: Druid

Yeah, I figured some of that had to be typos. Still unsure about requiring an exploration knack to get swimming at a reasonable level, though, since that means anyone else still has to wait too long, by default, and still gets swim and fly at the same time. Wouldn't it be better to just give...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #4: Druid

This one seems kind of glitchy. For example, the paragraph on Wild Shape clearly states you know two of your choice, but the chart equally clearly states three (and, on a personal note, I kind of hate the idea of "knowing" a limited number of forms, but that's more of a survey issue). And no...

Survey (A5E) Level Up Survey #1: Broad Outlines

Just finished the survey. Just seeing the nature of the questions asked, etc., is giving me a good feeling about this.

FATE - need some clarification on basic concepts

Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with cats. At least that's the way we played it. I have to admit I was a bit unsure about it, at first, but I had a blast once we got going. It can be very intriguing trying to think like an intelligent cat - and deal with foes who are mostly much larger (Create...

FATE - need some clarification on basic concepts

BTW, the list of books you mentioned warrants comment. Spirit of the Century is great, but keep in mind that it represents an older version of the rules. Combining it with something newish, like Secret Lives of Cats, may cause some confusion, if you are new to the game. The other two are world...

FATE - need some clarification on basic concepts

Phew! Okay, that's a lot of questions, so let's try to break it down a bit. Fate Points: I think you already have the gist of it. Fate points are, effectively, the "economy" of the game and, ideally, should flow pretty freely. They help generate the ebb and flow of drama, as you might expect...

Looking for a modern setting RPG

" 3.5 was a complete mess of a rules system" " FATE was a waste of their time" " abandoned savage worlds after reading the most idiotic intiative system they had ever seen" Here's my recommendation: when you show up asking for people's help, you might want to avoid insulting the tastes of...

Congratulations to the 2017 Gen Con EN World RPG Award Winners!

Gotta agree with that last comment. I find it a little bizarre that a game company that has no actual games that won any awards and that doesn't plan to have meaningful presence at Gencon would, nevertheless, take the Best Publisher award, for games, at Gencon.

Next RPG to invest in, need some help.

I would add my voice in for both 13th Age and Dungeon World, although, of the two, you might find that long-term D&D players may adapt more readily to the former (DW not only has a different system but also quite a different philosophy). If you are aiming for a different sort of fantasy with a...

    D&D 5E Would Sub-class Feats Solve a Problem? (Is there a problem?)

    Well... that was constructive...

    D&D 5E Would Sub-class Feats Solve a Problem? (Is there a problem?)

Yup, I hate to say it, but I would have to add this CON as problem number 4 to my list. Done properly, it would not, exactly, be a feat tax, but it sure might feel that way to some players, who are really just trying to crystallize a particular image.

    D&D 5E Would Sub-class Feats Solve a Problem? (Is there a problem?)

Yup, I'm exactly the same. I often like the flavor but find the implementation lacking, mainly because, having played the game a lot, I know that most characters won't get much past 5th to 8th level and, thus, will only ever get one or two of the listed features. Given that WotC has said that...

    Paizo News Roundup For July

I can only reply to what you post, not what you meant to post. And what you posted - the way you posted it... well, I may occasionally be an ass, but at least I meant to be.

Oh, dear... Well, I guess they had better completely overhaul their plans and disappoint their thousands of loyal fans, to make sure that they don't lose you! :hmm:

Busting Rocks · Accounting for Experience Without Using Numbers

Unless, of course, your culture uses dots and lines to represent numbers. Which some have. You seem to be confusing capability with convention. Which is why decimal places and numeric bases were invented. Having a base ten system, for example, simply makes it more convenient to express large...

    D&D 5E Do you miss attribute minimums/maximums?

Exactly! Having been there, too, I couldn't agree more, on every point.
