D&D 4E Rich Baker on his 4e Warlord

W.T.F. Did anyone express the opinion that favored classes were cool in any way? If you did, know that I hate you. Not cool. If the multiclassing is so perfect, it shouldn't matter which way you do it.

One last name poll: Warlord vs Marshal

If I really weigh "Marshal" against other names, I may prefer something else. However, when I first laid eyes on it in the Miniatures Handbook, I didn't have a WTF moment like I did when first reading about the warlord. I just thought it was a nifty class that didn't quite work as it should but...

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

And that's just the 3.5 version. 4E should open up a lot more possibilities like pacts with celestials.

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

I don't either (I think). The borderline case grew out of it, although his characters are still pretty one-dimensional. I'm the most likely one in my group to play a tiefling warlock and I'd probably enjoy it quite a bit. My post was facetious by the way, but seriously, I am going to be a bit...

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

Yes, you got me. I am a complete, uh, "purist elitist" in the worst fashion. I only play "OMG I'M SO CHAOTIC GOOD" characters (they're to right and a bit above the standard alignment grid if anyone is looking for them). That's right, no real "old school" player would think of playing anything...

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

Maybe he means it will attract a new generation of Drizzt wannabes, only this time they will all be tiefling warlocks. I think that would be far, far worse. I can handle irrational people who don't understand the difference between reality and make-believe, but I dread the next new player who...

    Let Warlord be Warlord

I don't think they will at this point. It would just invite more criticism that may impact their initial sales. The playtest that mentioned the warlord made it sound like they had to go out of their way to create a plausible backstory for the character. I have trouble believing there's going to...

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

They're great books and I'm all for it D&D being influenced by them. They hark back to more traditional wizardly themes and away from what I think of as silly "high fantasy" cliches.

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

I have a feeling that someone at WotC is really into the Harry Dresden books. Wizardly implements, the Hellfire Warlock, and now fey and demonic pacts all ripped right from the pages of the Dresden Files. These are not new concepts, but they seem to be back with a vengeance. Harry is a good...

    Warlord or Rubber Ducky?

Seriously, what's wrong with some of you? You have the chance not only to vote for Rubber Ducky, but also R Lee Emery, and you still vote for that ******* ***** *** ***** *********** Warlord?!?? 4E is the end of D&D!!!!

    Let Warlord be Warlord

I agree. They ought to have ushered out Fighter along with Thief and Magic-User. The contrast between Warrior and Soldier would be easy to grasp.

    Let Warlord be Warlord

Warlord don't necessarily fight. They command. You're mixing up strategy and tactics, two very different concepts. Whaaa?

    Warlord or Soldier?

The notion of soldiering goes back at least to Roman times. The word itself is hundreds of years old. Soldiers in fantasy are all over the place--The Black Company, The Malazan Book of the Fallen, A Song of Ice and Fire, The Wheel of Time. All chock full of soldiers. How can you say it isn't a...

    Warlord or Soldier?

Commander doesn't seem to be actively hated as much as other options, but I think none of the leader classes should actually be "commanding" anyone. This is the same issue I have with warlord. Commander doesn't have all the other baggage that warlord has, so I prefer it, but it still...

    Warlord or Soldier?

I can pretty much guarantee that any officer named class is going to get a lot of hate. The only one that I think can beat out warlord is marshal because of the "a dev said it" mindset fighting against itself.

    Warlord or Soldier?

Maybe? I don't really want to spam up the place with polls. Let's let it go a bit and see. I think "soldier" has perception issues that can't get explained really quickly. I didn't realize that a lot of people thought soldier was synonymous to enlisted man. Captains and generals are soldiers...

    Warlord or Soldier?

Ah, I see. I think the word "warlord" along with "leader" has really created the perception that this will be someone who in fact is barking orders and will have lordship over others. I don't see that as a good thing though. I'd rather have a soldier in the party, someone who is offering...

    Warlord or Soldier?

And warlord isn't? :D See, my guess is that we'll look at the class powers and think, "Uh, so what makes this guy a warlord? He sounds more like a sergeant."

    Warlord or Soldier?

Yes, but the fighter has never come with any abilities that indicate he's had squad combat training. I'd say that a lot of soldier background style characters are going to be re-imaged from fighters to warlords.

    Warlord or Soldier?

I don't think any of the other "leader" roles are going to have implied leadership over the group in name. Cleric and Druid for instance. In fact, I think the name Warlord has tainted perception of how the leader role functions.
