Semi-urgent: Tips on getting PCs to parley before shooting

This is more of a general thing, but I tell players that they don't lose a 'surprise round' for talking. That is, if you sneak up on the BBEG and catch him unawares, you are allowed to have dialogue with him, and if the dialogue turns to combat, the combat will start with the PCs getting a...

    Tieflings

I completely agree. I understand that 'tief-' is a corrupted 'translation', but it works for me all the same. The '-ling' suffix is kind of dismissive and derisive, and I think that fits too, since I would imagine that humans wouldn't really have a kind and welcoming name for their...

    Immobilized -- brilliant design

Interesting point there, but it's worth noting that this would still draw an Opportunity Attack, and the ranger can't use any of his sneaky abilities to Shift away before firing.

Saving throws are a coin toss?

It's also a 'burst 2'. That means a 5x5 box, or a total of 25 squares covered. Hopefully, he can get a lot of kobolds with it.

    Character Sheet: No Check Boxes?

Flipping them over has the added bonus of allowing you to write down information on the back, such as ongoing effects or recharge mechanics. For instance, if you have an attack that deals an ongoing 5 fire damage, you could write on the back of the card, '5 Ongoing Fire Damage (save ends...

D&D 4E Kill 200 Kobolds! (Or running 4E with just DDXP info)

Perhaps some abilities will recharge on low numbers. Imagine a monster with a powerful move ability with Recharge 5 6, and a powerful attack ability with Recharge 3 4. He's got pretty good odds of getting one of them back each turn, but he can't get them both back on the same turn.

    Kobold Skirmisher

I doubt that monsters have healing surges. The DDXP reports seem to indiciate that Healing Surges are a strategic resource to be whittled down over the course of a day, with it being unlikely that you could go through all of them in a single battle. Thus, monster healing will probably be...

    Quickstart rules from D&DExp

I'm hoping that threatening reach is only seen among elite and solo monsters. Those guys are entitled to gum up the battlefield a little bit.

Classes ... Much Less Flexible than Advertised

I hope that you're right about this. So far, the weapon restrictions on Rogue abilities seem like they severely undercut the promise of flexible, useful multiclassing. "Cool, I took a level of Rogue, now I can slide people around the battlefield, and all I have to do is, uh, put away my...

    Reframing the 15 min day

I had been thinking about the same thing. Though, if a 'session' ran really long, it might make sense to break and call it a 'new' session after pizza.

    WotC_Shoe on leaderless parties

I still want to run with the 'ridiculous braggart' Warlord, who is continually being shown up by the other characters, who are, on a game level, benefiting greatly from class abilities which the Warlord is, in-character, more or less unaware of. "Bah! I did all the REAL work on that ogre, and...

Paladins; Will they finally get to shine in this edition?

Don't dance too soon. Although 4E seems incredibly appealing to me on the whole, I am not thrilled about the idea of keeping track of a 5-square aura giving +1 to Perception.

    WotC_Shoe on leaderless parties

I personally think this would be good, but I think it would also create too much trouble from the 'realism' crowd. 'You can only drink two potions a combat because your stomach can't process more than that' is more likely to find a successful compromise.

    WotC_Shoe on leaderless parties

I agree. 'Standard action, draws Attacks of Opportunity' is ridiculous. You're already wasting your turn getting back a few hit points, now you have to get hit for the privilege? I know it's horribly gamist, but I think that potions as a minor action, with a limit to the number of potions you...
